It was completed, except for some minor additions, for Edward Norris by 1606. The predominant architectural message of Speke is the decorative potential of wood. The exterior, with its high proportion of timber to infill, is a riot of geometrical patterning, while many of the Tudor interiors are filled with carved and embellished panelling – including a genealogical overmantel from c.1560 – some probably imported from the Low Countries, where the Norrises had trading connections. Peter McGennan (1839-1920) arrived in Warrnambool in the 1870s and established a cooperage in Kepler Street and a boating business on the Hopkins River. He rebuilt the boating establishment after a fire in 1876. In 1896 McGennan established a Box and Case Factory in Davis Street (Merrivale Drive), importing timber from New Zealand, using chartered vessels and his own ships which included the ‘Speculant’. The box factory was a successful venture employing over 30 men until it was destroyed by fire in 1923. Peter McGennan was involved in the establishment of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford and the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. He was a Director of the latter company until his death. Members of the McGennan family were also important business people in Warrnambool, being involved in the hotel business and civic affairs for many years. The tin box may have been used to house family papers or business documents during Peter McGennan’s life and it was used to house his estate papers after his death. Many of these documents are in the collection of the Warrnambool &District Historical Society.This box is of some importance as it belonged to a prominent Warrnambool businessman and his family. It has social significance as an example of the type of storage items used early in the 20th century to hold documents etc.This is a rectangular tin box with the black paint on the outside peeling and yellow paint inside. There is a metal lock which has no key. There is a small handle on the top added to the tin surface. The series of photographs show a number of sites included in the Rupertswood Estate. By 1851 William Clarke had acquired 31,375 acres of land in the Sunbury district. The foundation stone for Rupertswood Mansion was laid on 29th August 1874 by Mrs. W. J. Clarke, daughter-in-law of 'Big Bull'. The Headland Estate housing development began in the early 1980s. This is an 1877 document, the Letters of Administration in connection with the will and probate of William Ellis, a veterinary surgeon from Wimmera Street, Stawell. He died after an altercation with W. Richards, the landlord of the Post Office Hotel, where he was knocked against the wall of the verandah of the hotel. He left a small estate, with his property valued at under £107. This document is only of interest in that it came from the former legal offices of Mackay Taylor in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. It originally came from Thomas Goodall, a legal clerk in the office of lawyer Ernest Chambers who passed it on to George Mackay, the lawyer in the forerunner firm of Mackay Taylor where it remained until the firm of Mackay Taylor ceased to exist and the buildings were cleaned out. This is a piece of parchment folded and sealed at the bottom edge with a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria. The material in the document is handwritten in black ink. Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. The photograph is of additional aesthetic significance as it was photographed by J. E. Barnes. Josiah Earl Barnes is a nationally significant photographer. He was also the most important photographer to have worked in Kew. He was active as a photographer in the district from c.1906 until his death in 1921. Best known as 'the Embarkation Photographer' (see the Australian War Memorial collection), J. Earl Barnes was also the official photographer employed by the Borough (and later Town, then City) of Kew. He clearly also completed commercial jobs for local businesses, as is the case in this photograph of a house for a local real estate and financial agent.A photograph, mounted on board of a double fronted Federation-era brick villa in Kew, photographed for a local real estate agent and financier by J. On 4th of August 1978 work began on the construction of the Goonawarra Estate on land that was the former Goonawarra Farm which overlooked the town of Sunbury abnd the Jacksons Creek valley. Tait collection: item 54 of 62 This document gives the details of the Letters of Administration of Michael Maloney who died intestate in 1907. He was aged 64. In this document he was described as a farmer from Dennington, near Warrnambool but a Michael Maloney is listed in 1866 as a butcher and this may be the same person or a member of his family. Michael Maloney left real estate to the value of £160 and personal estate to the value of £38. This was passed over to the son, Michael Maloney, a railway employee of Flemington, Melbourne. The lawyers involved in drawing up this document were O’Mahony and Murray who had legal offices in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Con O’Mahony had established his practice in Warrnambool in the 1880s under the name of Klingender, O’Mahony and Murray and by the 20th century this was operating under the name of O’Mahony and Murray. Con O’Mahony died in 1920. This document was then passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street where it was located in 2014 (the former premises of the legal firm of Mackay Taylor). This document is of some interest as it gives details of the Letters of Administration of Michael Maloney, a farmer in the Dennington area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It will be useful for researchers. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two to make four pages. The front page has ruled black margins and there is handwritten material on two of the pages in brown ink. These two pages also have printed italic script on them in black ink with the handwritten material inserted in the spaces left. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and there is a red stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court on the first page. The document is somewhat stained. The document gives the details of the Letters of Administration of Michael Maloney of Dennington who died in 1907. This is a typed copy of William Earle’s History of Port Fairy written in 1896. The history is of interest to researchers and the information contained in it has been updated and extended by historians in recent times. William Earle, a printer with a business in Port Fairy came to Australia with his parents, William and Mary, in 1854. He was a Councillor and Mayor and was heavily involved in local community affairs. He died in 1902 at the age of 51. His 1896 history won a prize in a local Industrial Exhibition and was widely acknowledged as an important primary source of early Port Fairy history. This booklet is of minor interest as it is a copy of a 19th century Port Fairy history book and is not a rare item.
