John Thomas Hayes (1830-1909) came to Bendigo in 1853 and married Harriet Rokewood in 1858. He established the Commercial Bakery in Hargreaves Street. View of Charing Cross and Pall Mall Bendigo, featuring the Alexandra fountain still under construction. The fountain was jointly funded by the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition in 1879, a 500 pound donation by George Lansell and a 700 pound grant from the Sandhurst City Council. The fountain was designed by William Vahland and was opened 5/7/1881. The fountain is 28 feet tall and sits in a 2 feet deep pond that is 50 feet in diameter. This is an artist's impression in reproduction of the Mechanics Institute building as it was in the 1880's. It has since changed quite significantly, especially what can be seen of the surrounds. The insert picture is an impression of the Industrial Pavilion which, as is stated, was used between 1856-1864 as temporary premises for the Institute. The print was first published in 'The Australian Sketcher' under the title "Sandhurst Mechanics Institute and free library: the new and old." Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and at times, international level.
