The second St Mary's Catholic Church Eltham was located at the corner of Main Road and Henry Street, Eltham and was opened/blessed October 13, 1912. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. This modern (1960s) style church was built to replace the destoyed St Mary's and was called Our Lady of Help Christians. Stephen's Butcher's shop operated after Couper's Butchers ceased. The site had always been a butchers shop, until Bill Stephens and his son Gary closed. The reason why Bill Stephen ceased business was he liked to spread sawdust on the floor of the shop. When health regs deemed this practise not sanitary, Bill and Gary decided to close the business.
