These two items were sent in the 1940s to Tom Terrington of Framlingham ( about 28 kilometres north east of Warrnambool) from Donald Mackintosh. Tom Terrington (b. 1897) worked at various jobs until he took over the Framlingham store in the 1940s. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He wrote poetry and researched and wrote extensively on Framlingham history. Donald Mackintosh (1866-1951) was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold medallist. He competed in trapshooting events all over the world, winning 30 gold medals, making a considerable amount of money and holding the world trapshooting championship title from 1903 to 1908. He was a keen photographer and wrote poetry under the name of ‘The Rambler’. This small folder is of great interest as it contains a poem sent to Tom Terrington by Donald Mackintosh (The Rambler). Tom Terrington is important in Framlingham’s history and his friendship with Donald Mackintosh, an Australian and world trapshooting champion and a poet is of considerable interest. The tone of the poem echoes also the despondency felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two. This is a piece of cream thickened paper folded in two with a typed copy of a poem pasted on the inside of the paper and a copy of a prose piece typed in ornate script and pasted on to a piece of cardboard and enclosed in the cream folder. Both of the typed items have handwritten messages at the bottom of the text. The cream folder is a little crumpled and stained. ‘The Rambler 1942-3’ ‘For T. In 1935 his daughter Winifred (1903-1985) married Phillip Sebastien Slavin (1907-1980), known as Paddy, who took over the business. He is first listed at 118 Union Road (no occupation noted) in the electoral roll of 1937 through until 1963. This Form was part of the largest intake to date as Ringwood Technical School entered its fourth year at the Heathmont Road campus. The 269 Form 1 students in 12 groups, 1A to 1M, took the school’s population to nearly 700. I conceive my work as unfinished fragments of memory and childhood rituals, and through the art making process, I build and then peel back the layers of these memories and early influences, to reveal my personal dreamscape. Through the fusion of colour, texture, mark making and rubbing back, my intuitive rendering of the media creates layers that like memories, can be stacked up, hidden, peeled away, rubbed out, etched back in, and the process of layering and building up of a tactile textured surface, reflects memory itself; with its elusiveness and hard to grasp impressions that are more like ingrained watermarks. As I work, layering the surface then taking it back; rebuilding, adding marks and burnishing back, I feel into the textures, and through this tactile rendering I often discover something unintended and the end result is not quite how I perceived it in the planning. Perhaps something of a happy accident, which again reflects the arbitrariness of memory. I see my artworks less as paintings, but assemblages, with the layering technique creating a sculptural effect that reflects my great interest in the landscape and its beautiful and varied colours, shapes and textures. Part of my process is to take long drives into the country where I grew up, photographing along the way, to create a visual documentary that then informs my practice. The wide paddocks of the Victorian wheatbelt, beneath the endless blue of the horizon evokes very early memories so that a singular Bullock, a fencepost, a hay roll or corrugated iron wall, is so uniquely resonant to me, I am compelled to create this in my work. My connection to the land, to farming practices; the poplars, oaks and elm trees of my childhood holidays, is a mindscape that I return to again and again as I try to recreate that early sense of wonder, love and familiarity, grief and joy, that forms my unique vision. Peter Haeffner’s birth details have not been found but he was the son of Henry Norman Neil and Mabel Haeffner, who in 1922 lived at 'Spring Creek' near Tallangatta, close to Henry’s parents Henry Thomas Haeffner (1858-1935) and Eliza Jane (ms Chesney - 1868-1940), farmers near Tallangatta. Henry and Mabel moved to 22 Wharton Street, Surrey Hills before moving back to the Tallangatta area to help out on his parents' farm during the Depression. They moved back to Surrey Hills c1932 to 33 Clyde Street. Peter had a sister Marjorie and brothers Jack and Donald. His service record has not been found, possibly due to a mis-spelling of the surname Haeffner. Marj, Jack and Donald were pupils at Chatham Primary School. Webb, Mc Donald and Co., Engineers, Brassfounders, Sheet Metal Workers, Plumbers appear to be the forerunners of the firm of Webb Brothers and Co. which was as important business in Lava Street, Warrnambool in the early 20th century. The Webb Brothers were especially noted for their windmill making, establishing a business in South Melbourne in 1921.This luggage label is of some significance as it is the only item we have of the firm of Webb, McDonald and Co.Buff coloured rectangular label with dark blue text . Mr William Burke settled at Dooboobetic near Donald in the 1860s his sons eventually working their own farms on subdivisions of the original property. Archibald (Archie) whose team is pictured had a portion named "Inverleigh". The Pony Club was a dream of Diana Bassett-Smith, which came true, based on the British Horse Society Pony Club formed in 1929; a worldwide organisation. A meeting was called at ‘Lavender Park’, the home of Mrs Mary Grant and her brother George ‘Mel’ Balfour. Invited to the meeting were Baye Skues, Eric Rundle, Ben Taylor, the Barringtons, Smiths, Lou Lewis and Gwen Cascaden. They all supported Diana Bassett-Smith for forming a Pony Club. The first formal meeting was held at ‘Landscape’, which was the home of the Barringtons and the former home of artist Percy Leason. Negotiations with the Lands Department resulted in the club being granted use of the grounds in Eltham Lower Park for a peppercorn rent. Eltham was the 4th Pony Club in Victoria; the other three being Frankston, Templestowe and Western District. Together they formed the Pony Club Association of Victoria at Diana Bassett-Smith’s instigation.
