Colonel Tom Price, following a distinguished military career in India, was tasked with raising Victoria's military forces in 1885. The mounted arm was the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Contingents of the VMR served in the South African War 1899-1902. Following Federation, the companies of the VMR became Australian Light Horse regiments. In 2005 a memorial was erected in the Sunbury Cemetery in memory of the children who had lived and died and buried in unmarked graves, while being inmates at the Industrial School, which was located within the former Asylum grounds. Given that the negative, of unknown provenance was in a collection that included a photograph of the grave of Violet Steel, the photo may be of her brothers and sisters, whose family home was in Elsternwick. The photograph is looking down the Children's Memorial walk and is taken from the rotunda in the Sunbury Cemetery. After the erection of the Children's memorial, the Sunbury Family History Society and the Sunbury & District Heritage Association with support from HumCity Council compiled a list of burials of 2000 former Sunbury Asylum inmates who were buried in unmarked graves within the Cemetery. Their names are listed on metal display boards that are attached to the inside walls of the rotunda.The rotunda in Sunbury cemetery is now a memorial to the many unfortunate Asylum inmates who were buried in unmarked graves there. St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla originally occupied a site along Oaklands Road, adjacent to 'Woodlands' homestead. It was established in 1859. With there building of the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine it was found that the church on its existing site was directly under the flight path of the aircraft so the building was demolished stone by stone and rebuilt in the Bulla township adjacent to the Alistair Clark Rose Garden. The original site has not been developed because some early graves are there.St. Mary's Church at Bulla is one of the earliest to be established in the Bulla district. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-42: Thomas William Hobbs BEM. Thomas was born in England and came to the Island in the 1920's to work for the Chicory Farmers. He later owned his own farm at Ventnor and won the Better Farming Competition conducted by the Phillip Island Council. He was always an active community worker. Thomas was a Councillor and served two terms as President. He was the only resident to be awarded the British Empire Medal, Civil Division, for services to Phillip Island. Thomas died 1980 aged 75. His wife Catherine died 1991 aged 87. 466-43: Matilda Richardson. Matilda was born at Kyneton on 12th July 1865 and came to Cowes with her parents in 1869. She attended Cowes Primary School with her brothers and sisters. She became ill in November 1872 and died on 10th February 1873 aged 8 years and 7 months, from a severe bout of Quinsy. It was a great sadness to the family and they went to a lot of trouble to secure Matilda a fine grave in the cemetery.
