One of the activities the places the campers visited was a fish hatchery in the Beechworth area. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The photograph was taken when the students from Bulla and Mickleham Primary Schools combined to attend a camp at Beechworth in 1988. During that time the children were engaged in a number of different outdoor activities as a component of their outdoor education. Recognising some of the native birds of the area was one of their activities where the children experiences the birds actually landing on them.The varied activities that the children engaged in at the school camp helped to give them a better appreciation and understanding of the natural environment. Tents set up along the Diamond Creek on a property that would become "Willandra," a poultry farm and then in 1956, an aged care facility and residence known as Judge Book Village. It is located west of the railway line, north of the railway station in Eltham on Diamond Street. it is believed that the convention camp was for young people for the purpose of Christian fellowship, bible study and worship. Other activities included local hikes. A report in the Evelyn Observer on Friday, January 6, 1911, p2 noted: "ELTHAM. The holiday season brought out lots of visitors to our beauty spot. The visitors booked to Eltham on Boxing-Day numbered about 1900, and New Year's Day (Monday) some 1500. The threatening aspect of the weather on the morning of the 2nd and no doubt deterred many from venturing out. Fine weather has prevailed throughout, and the chief sufferers are those who catered for hot, thirsty crowds and did not find them so bent on ices and fluid refreshments as is usual at this time of the year. Campers have been strongly in evidence. One especially large camp of Christian enthusiasts being located near the station with dining booth, gospel tent, cooking range, etc., all complete, numbering some twenty tents. These good folk evidently intend to make the best of both worlds, but some of their negro camp meeting methods appear to have shocked the sensibilities of sober-going folk. With the exception of a slight ruction on the railway platform on Monday night, which will probably be aired in the local court, the holiday makers as a whole were very orderly." Made at a forge outside the camp 3 perimeter by Gotthilf Kaltenbach & Manuel Kaltenbach. It is made from British Army scrap metal. Used for fine metal turning. The Witworth gauges were not used in Central Europe after 1918. The motor that was on it was a small electric sewing machine motor which was discarded about ten years ago in Germany. Photographs of Junior Legatees kayaking on the McAllister River in Licola. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. Including an annual two week camp, usually in January. The venue varied over the years. It was with a group of photos from the 1990's in a folio with paper labels. A photo of a group of girls posing for a group photo. They are mostly wearing a coloured sash across their clothes which appear to be in different colours. So perhaps they represented different gourds or classes. There is a wide range of ages too. Legacy ran many classes for the children in their care, this could be an outing or camp photo. There is one legatee in the photo.
