The Captain Cook bicentenary was commemorated in Australia in 1970. The British explorer Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook sailed and charted the East Coast of Australia in 1770, and claimed the Eastern Seabord of the Continent for the British Crown. This is not considered the official bicentenary of Australia, but rather the mapping of the Eastern coastlineLike many other towns around Eastern Australia, Yackandandah celebrated the bi centenary with a street parade, enjoyed by residents of surrounding areas including the Kiewa Valley3 black and white photographs mounted on buff card. Kenneth Malcolm Mortimer was born in Leneva, Wodonga, Victoria on 9 October 1895. He attended school in Wangaratta before entering the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1913. Along with the rest of his class, he graduated in June 1915. Mortimer was appointed as a Lieutenant with the 29th Battalion on 1 July 1915. He embarked with Headquarters Staff, 29th Battalion, from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanuis (A11) on 10 November 1915. Whilst training in Egypt in February 1916, he was promoted to Captain. He was in command of a company of the 29th Battalion at Fromelles, Armentieres, France in July 1916. and was reported missing, presumed killed in action on 20 July 1916, aged 20 years. Mortimer’s remains were buried along with those of hundreds of others in a mass grave near Pheasant Wood, close to the battlefield. This mass grave was rediscovered in 2008. After extensive research and DNA testing, the remains of Captain Mortimer were finally identified in April 2018. He was buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Fromelles and his grave rededicated on July 19, 2018, 102 years after his death. A memorial tablet was erected to his memory at St Luke’s Church in Wodonga. Honour Certificates WW1 - From 1915 onwards, recruits in many shires and towns in eastern Australia were honoured by local government authorities. A common form of recognition was the award of honour certificates. The first honour certificates were presented in 1915 and 1916 to men who had yet to leave Australia. The designers and publishing companies solicited business directly from councils. Publishers began to print two different types of certificates: honour certificates to thank soldiers who had survived and memorial certificates to commemorate the dead. D.W. Paterson, a Melbourne publishing firm, claimed they had supplied certificates to over 150 cities and shires in Victoria and New South Wales, including the Shire of Wodonga. Paterson also had the widest range of designs The certificate signified that the officials of the community recognised and shared the family's pride and grief. In the earliest designs, the legend "Australia's sons answered the call" appears below the shield. This was replaced with "For Liberty/ ANZACs/ For Justice". After the United States entered the war in April 1917, the design was reworked to include the US flag. Its presence in this certificate dates its publication as late 1917. The certificate was signed by S. T Parker, Shire President and R. H. Murphy, Council Secretary on 4th August 1918. Pte N T Simmons enlisted on 14 October 1915 and was taken on strength of 59 Battalion in April 1916. He was reported missing on 19 July 1916 and latter confirmed killed in action ar Fromelles. After Huntley & Palmer introduced these tins in 1860, all biscuit makers were competing to develop original and novel tins to sell their products. They soon became a collectable item. These heads and tails dice were used by the troops to gamble in World War 1 and World War 11 and were the pre-cursur to the two-up game which was a popular form of gambling in Australia post World War 11. Later versions of two-up were played with two pennies on a board. A hand made cardboard box containing 18 cubed shaped dice of various colours and sizes. Three red with white lettering, three dark grey with yellow lettering, six orange/brown with blue and red lettering, and six brown with white lettering. 1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The brigade now possesses a reel and 500ft. of hose, and a shed is being erected in Little Walpole-street for a station. The council have applied for six additional fireplugs in the Main-road, so that the brigade may now be considered fairly established. The Volunteer Fire Brigade was replaced in 1891 by a detachment of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and a new Fire Station in Walton Street constructed in 1893; subsequently demolished in 1941.The certificate includes the only known image of the first fire station in Kew. It was donated by Mrs L. Bray. The donor's father, Mr. A. Wood, was a member at time of the Brigade's 'disbandment'.Kew Volunteer Fire Brigade: Certificate of Membership, 1886. The cottage was built for Captain William Lonsdale (1799-1864), the first Police Magistrate of Melbourne. The cottage was built by the Royal Engineers in Sydney and flat packed to Melbourne in 1837, erected at Jolimont. In 1891 the cottage had to be removed to make way for the Jolimont Railway. It was bought by A. M. Alexander and put up as a beach house in Point Nepean Road (Nepean Highway). LADIES PONY GIG – circa early 1900’s) The gig was built by T Rose, North Melbourne. Australian coachbuilders adopted American designs and modified these to suit local conditions, eg mudguards added for muddy country roads. As roads improved, lighter and faster designs were made. These gigs were more comfortable than the normal farm cart / town cart (see nearby butcher’s cart), as they were often sprung for comfort rather than carrying heavy weights. $1 coin issued to commemorate the action one hundred years previously that resulted in the award of Australia's first Victoria Cross (VC), to Captain Neville Howse, the only medic to receive a VC. Captain Neville Howse's name and the date of his action are struck on either side of the coin next to the image of the Victoria Cross. Embarked for France 26.3.1916. Promoted to Sergeant 10.8.1916. Hospitalised with trench feet on 6.11.1916. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant 3.3.1917. Hospitalised with haemoptysis 20.7.1917. Promoted to Lieutenant 30.9.1917. WIA 4.10.1917 and remained on duty. Awarded the Military Cross for the same days actions. Discharged from the AIF 15.8.1919.
