Travis advised that the driver could be Max Green, ex ESCo employee, Brother in Law of Mrs Gwen Kellett. Has the Commonwealth bank and National Mutual building in the background and Berry Anderson printers. On front of tram is an advertisement for Mutual Homes. Date of photo on folder 28/9/1961. This date appears to be incorrect, as Reg Item 417, Wal Jack photo of 2/1/61 shows the tramcar in the same stage of conversion. Probably taken 12/1960 or 1/1961. W.D. Vaughan (Kew's Civic Century, 1960, pp.195-6) quotes Council Minutes of 1938 and 1939 to record that: "After protracted negotiations between the Council, the Railways Department and the Tramways Board agreement was reached in June, 1938, for the filling of the railway cutting at the Harp Junction and shifting tram tracks to the High Street alignment ... The Outer Circle railway land from Princess Street to Park Crescent was purchased by the Kew Council in October, 1939, for 2,750 [pounds]. The land from Park Crescent to High Street was leased for 1 [pound] per annum. Considerable work was done in levelling the embankments to the original surface level."Important and rare photograph of the period, showing major works by Kew Council in Kew East working on a significant piece of urban infrastructure.Small, original black and white positive (photograph) showing workers and vehicles filling in the tracks of the former Outer Circle railway at East Kew. In the background is the metal bridge with brick piers, adjacent to the Harp Junction. The bridge crossed the cutting, linking the two parts of High Street. Behind the tip truck, painted on the side with the name 'Fowler Quarries' [located Keilor Road, North Essendon], one can see shops [including T.G. Garroway, Cash Grocer] in High Street. What appears to be the City of Kew Steamroller is immediately in front of the bridge. A group of passers-by watch from the bridge and from the road. Annotation in pencil on verso: "Filling in Outer Circle line at High St East Kew prior to straightening High St. (c. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. Lily's sister Alice married Hector Williamson (1892-1981) in 1921. Hector was a civil servant and worked at the Melbourne Museum, where accommodation was provided. They had one daughter Margaret. Another sister Minnie (Min) married Hector's brother Charles (Charlie) Prosser Williamson (1893-1961). Charlie was an engineer and ran a hardware business in Whitehorse Road (near the tram terminus). They lived at 12 Barloa Road and had one son, Donald Williamson, born 1924. Donald (Service number VX146389) entered RMC on 28 February 1942 and graduated on 14 December 1943. He enlisted the following day as a Lieutenant with the 2/32 Infantry Battalion. He was mentioned in Despatches "for exceptional service in the field S.W.P. area". Promulgated in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 6 March 1947; was killed in action in Brunei on 3 July 1945. Williamson was buried in grave B.C.10 in Labuan War Cemetery, Borneo, Malaysia.This is part of a large donation related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families with connections to the Surrey Hills / Mont Albert area.A sepia coloured photo with a cream border of 2 girls in either a front or back garden. One is sitting on a cane chair and holding a young baby; the other is standing close by. The fence behind appears to be of constructed of posts with a metal horizontal support and wire mesh. Also the launch of a tram by Junior Legatees Kim Anderson and Peter Hazelager. Another photo is a group of dignitaries in front of the tram. The tram was painted to promote Legacy in 1995 which was the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II. Wording on the tram says: "This year - Australia remembers the Heroes of World War II / 50 years on / Legacy never forgets to care for the widows and children of those who fought for our freedom". It appeared in The Answer in June 1995 after it had been launched on May 2nd by President David Millie and Public Transport Minister, Mr Alan Brown. The car has been converted for one man operation but retains the MESCo's double lineouts that were replaced by single yellow lines in the 1940s. Photos taken on the last day of the Mt Pleasant tram line 5/9/1971 1 - Tram 43 at the Gardens - trams reversed at this point and returned to Mt Pleasant. 2 - Trams 43, 13 and 14 in Sturt St West at the Russell St loop. 3 - Tram 13 in Sturt St, inbound with an ANZ bank and Miss Heidi? dress shop in the background. 4 - Tram 30 in bound in Sturt near Doveton St with the Queen Alexandra Bandstand in the view. 5 - A busy Sturt St with three trams and people observing on a nice day. 6 - and now with five trams at Tramway or the City Centre - trams 39, 27, 12 7 - Tram 43 pulls into the stop at Sturt and Lydiard St, 8 -Turning into Lydiard St North with 39 behind - a man with a point bar and possibly the Inspector as well. Behind are the Town Hall and the Myer store. Has a "advertisement" for shoppers travelling in comfort between 930 and 430, dinner and afternoon tea at the Wattle Park Chalet and Family excursion tickets to the Beaches and Wattle Park - 2/6. Used on tram 27 to celebrate is "1,000,000" miles, but later work determined that there had a been an error in addition of the miles operated statistics - see reference for the background story. Two copies held. See item 9651 for a 3rd copy.Demonstrates a banner to mark a tram that had been calculated to achieve 1,000,000 miles of running in Ballarat.Bammer - Painted on treated white linen, banner used to celebrate Tram No. 27, reaching 1,000,000 miles. Has wording in large red capital letters "This tram has just completed 1,000,000 miles in Ballarat". Fitted with metal eyelets in each corner and centre of top and bottom edges. See Reg. Item 3316 for photo taken by The Courier on 29/6/1968. Has been rolled around a tube with tissue paper for storage. Hand copied letters from the files of the Shire of Ballarat East and City of Ballaarat. 1 - dated 31/8/1880 asking for the concession to construct tramways in their district and one dated 19/10/1880 to the City of Ballaarat for the same purpose. Included is a letter dated 30/9/1880 from James Roberts, Supt trams to J. Smith recommending the type of car currently in use in Sydney as the "Yankee" car manufactured by Brill of Philadelphia. 2 - copy of letter dated 6/9/1880 about horse tram rails and support systems - signed by Jas R Davies.
