John Raymond Bruns (Jack) enlisted in the 38th Bn CMF date unknown or "V" number at this point. A family photo shows the marriage of Jack to Margaret Joyce (Peggy) Ball dated 10.3.1942. The 38th Bn were part of the 6th INF Brigade and they moved to WA in March 1942 for Garrison duties. By the DVA roll he enlists in Geraldton on 23.7 1942 with the number VX88627. The unit relocates to the NT in January 1943. He is discharged from the Army on 13.4.1944 with the rank of Cpl in 6th Inf Brigade Dep Platoon. A collection of 3 photographs with a page of notes on the West family. Solomon West and his brother John became pioneer settlers on Phillip Island. Solomon married Elizabeth Bryant in 1857 at St Andres Church of England, Brighton. Elizabeth died in 1895 on Phillip island and is buried in the Phillip Island cemetery. Archie was the son of William and Jane West who died tragically in the Bendigo rail yards at the age of 21. Jane was buried in the same grave in Bendigo. The Jarrahmond State School No. 2745 near Orbost was one of the earliest in this district. It opened in 1886 at the same time as Orbost and shared a teacher (Campbell McKay who was shortly afterwards replaced by John Rowe who stayed in this position until 1908). The building was financed and built by local farmers on the Stapley property. After a large and damaging flood in the nearby Snowy River in 1893 , the building was shifted to a new location. In 1926, a new building was constructed by the Vic Ed Dept. where it remained until the school was closed in 1948 and children from the Jarrahmond area were then bused to Orbost. The firm Dring and Fage were active from 1790 to 1940 in London and were manufacturers of hydrometers and mathematical instruments they became established in London in 1790 by John Dring, who was a brass worker and hydrometer maker, and William Fage. Dring and Fage manufactured also saccharometers and other instruments used to measure the strength of alcohol. These instruments were primarily used to calculate excises. They traded at various addresses in London and they were at 56 Stamford St. between 1903 and 1938. By 1850 the company was owned by Edward Hall and Edward Jenkin and in 1940 the company became Dring & Fage Ltd, trading till the 1960s.Historically, gauging has meant measuring a volume, these gauging instruments were used by Customs and Excise and manufacturers for determining the volume and contents of liquid containers. For Customs the determination and collection of duty on imported goods which has had a very long history. Chaucer was a Customs Officer as was his father and grandfather, excise was first officially introduced in 1643, with the aim of maintaining military forces raised by the English Parliament at that time. Excise was initially a duty on home produced alcoholic beverages and soap but being easily applied, spread rapidly to a wide range of goods including imports of varying kinds. The government departments of Customs and Excise merged only in 1909 and it is from around this time that our instrument was made and used. The item demonstrates a long social history of the practice of Government's collecting duty on alcoholic beverages and thereby makes this item historically significant as it was used locally at Port Fairy by the ports Customs agents. Harry Gillham, President and EDHS and Convenor of the Nillumbik Shire Council's Advisory Committee for the War memorial at Kangaroo Ground was for some years working on the refurbishment of the Tower of Rememberance and the surrounding park. The Committee decided to produce plaques to commemorate the armed conflicts in Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam. The plaques were funded by public donations and cost $10,000. The community donated via donation boxes placed at Eltham Library. NL 140 Sept 2001 Governor John landy and other digniaries attended the event where the Governor unveiled the plaque which was attached to the historical tower in November 2001. The item is a 50th Anniversary of Commonwealth of Australia Schools Medal 1951. The medal was awarded to school children of the commonwealth of Australia in 1951 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Federation of Australia. The design was chosen after a competition, with the valuable cash prize of two hundred guineas, it was won by John Wolgang Elischer for his depiction of a man hand sowing wheat, The wheat has grown to represent the seven States of Australia on the other side to the medal Elischer was an Austrian sculptor and an Associate of the Royal Academy. Mary Ellen Dunbar nee Johns 1873 - 1936, Mary was born in Walhalla, married Hugh Dunbar at Traralgon 1900 and had 3 sons. Hugh's daughter from his 1st marriage, Ada was blind and she was well cared for by Mary Ellen and later her brothers.After Hugh died 1910 she moved to Bentleigh ( East Brighton) and joined the Methodist Congregation Mary was appointed Trustee of the the Bentleigh Recreation Ground 1914 - the other Trustees were men. The family moved to a farm in Carlsruhe near Kyneton 1920. Mary is buried in Kyneton. This decorative hinge was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Casino (1882 – 1932) in 1969. It is one of the shipwreck artefacts in the John Chance Collection. The hinge has round sections on the back that could have been mounting points. The coastal trader SS Casino (1882–1932) had a run of almost 50 years along the coast of Western Victoria. She traded goods and food as well as carrying passengers from port to port on her many voyages. This vase may have been included in her cargo or could have been amongst the personal luggage of the people on board.The hinge is historically significant as an example of hardware existing in Victoria the 1930s or even earlier. The hinge is also an example of artefacts recovered from a Victorian shipwreck in the 1960s. It was recovered by John Chance, a diver from the wreck of the S.S. Casino in the 1960s-70s. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The hinge has significance because of its association with the S.S. Casino, which played an historical role in Western Victoria, providing transport, communication and trade along the coast between Melbourne and Portland in the late 19th and the early 20th century, visiting the ports at Apollo Bay, Warrnambool and Belfast (Port Fairy). The S.S. Casino was the only regular trader with normal passenger accommodation along the West Coast and the only Western District steamship that was in service between 1854 and 1939, and to be represented in the Victorian Heritage Shipwreck register, and to have been wrecked in the Western District, and to have the wreck located, and to be accessible to divers. The wreck of the S.S. Casino, and its associated relics, is considered an important part of Victorian and Australian cultural heritage and is now protected as a Historic Shipwreck under State and Commonwealth Law in the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976). This lock was recovered from an unknown shipwreck in the coastal waters of Victoria in the late 1960s to early 1970s. It is part of the John Chance Collection. The small size of the lock indicates that it was possibly used for cabinetry such as a cupboard, desk or wardrobe. It may have been part of the ship’s fittings or perhaps luggage or cargo. The blue-green patina on the metal is caused by a reaction from its exposure to external elements such as the sea water. The lock is likely to have been in the water for over 100 years, as the more widely known shipwrecks along Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast date from 1837 to 1940. Although the lock is not linked to a particular shipwreck, it is recognised as being historically significant as an example of hardware either as part of the ship’s fittings or imported for use in Colonial Victoria in the 19th to early 20th century. The lock is also significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver in Victoria’s coastal waters in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Items that come from several wrecks have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The Royal Princess Theatre, 73 View St., Bendigo, was designed by William Charles Vahland and opened on 31/8/1874. It had a capacity of 2000 and was lit by gas until 1898 when electricity became available. The original proprietors were John Croley (1827-1899) and William (Billy) Heffernan (1840-1899). It was Bendigo's first permanent picture house in 1910, with it's first showing being the silent film "The Desert Song". It closed in 1930 before reopening in 1936 after being rebuilt in the Art Deco style. These forceps were owned by Dr John Sidney Green, who was very skilled in their use and at the peak of his career in 1936. Green was a contemporary of Arthur Wilson and Arthur Chambers [Communication from Dr Cyrus Jones, 17/7/1997]. These forceps are unusual due to the addition of the Neville traction rod attachment, which is usually associated with Barnes-Neville forceps rather than Simpson forceps.
