Book, Barry Rayner, Seek Light - SUNSHINE HIGH SCHOOL 1955-1991, 1991
In December 1954 the Parents Association was formed and met at the Sunshine State School. In February 1955 classes commenced with First and Second Form students accommodated in several local Halls. In May 1955 the students transferred to the new building. Over the years many children with overseas background attended the school. The school ceased to exist in its own right in 1991, and amalgamated with five other local secondary schools to form the multi campus Sunshine College in 1992. The former Sunshine High School buildings on Ballarat Road are now part of the Sunshine Campus of Victoria University. The book contains photographs and written articles from the school years as well as photographs of those attending the 1991 reunion. The history of the school is covered in this book under the headings: (1) Beginnings, (2) The Sixties, (3) The Seventies, (4) The Final Years, and (5) Vale. The major historical feature of this book is however the 17 pages of Staff and Student names, and the years they were at the school. This book is of historic and research significance. As well as providing some of the history of the school, the book has a comprehensive list of the staff and students that were at the school. Researchers will be able to determine the numbers of students commencing each year, the ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, and especially in the early years determine the spelling of the Surnames and Christian names of many students with overseas backgrounds. In the 1950's some Primary School teachers had the habit of changing students European Christian names to the English versions, and so the new names may have carried on to High School enrolment. For example some students named Ryszard were enrolled as Richard. Many students however were enrolled with correct ethnic spelling of their names. Although the list of students names appears to be comprehensive until about 1985, it appears to fail after that. It is known that some students names are missing in the final years.Front cover has a maroon coloured background with a pair of diagrammatic light blue hands reaching towards an orange and yellow source of light. The words SEEK LIGHT and SUNSHINE HIGH SCHOOL 1955-1991 are also on the front cover. The rear cover is plain white coloured. The book contains 68 pages plus the covers.Inside the front cover is an acknowledgement by John Scott to the work of the 1991 Reunion Committee for the production of the book, with eight people and their roles specifically named. The secondary title of the book as written inside on page 1 appears to be "Sunshine High Reflections 1954 - 91"seek light, sunshine high school, 1991 reunion, 1955, 1954, list of students, list of staff -

Bernard O'Dowd, 1954
Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. Letter, Legacy Archives, 1978
These letters from 1978, record the first known attempts by Melbourne Legacy to preserve and store their history and what "The Wardens" of the archives believed was the most appropriate way to proceed with the project. Legatees Brian Armstrong and Frank Doolan were appointed by the Board of Management to scope the work to establish and archive as 'The Wardens'. They mention in their report to the BOM that many original files were lost in a fire 'many years ago' and they had collected material from many sources. They felt that a proper storage facility and indexing was required and were not able to complete those tasks. It would appear most of their work remained in their envelopes and storage system until the Victorian Collections archive was created. Came from an envelope labelled 'P2 Archives Origin' in red pen as per the archive system used by the original archive.Significant in that the Board of Melbourne Legacy understood and valued the importance of preserving and documenting the history of Melbourne Legacy. A record that Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong had done considerable work at creating the initial archive for Legacy in 1978.Two letters about the original attempt to create an archive. 00456.1 Copy of a letter typed on Legacy A4 letterhead, dated 7 February 1978, to the Legacy secretary from Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong. 00456.2 Letter typed on quarto Legacy letterhead, dated 10 March 1978, from the secretary advising their letter had been tabled at the Board Meeting.00456.1. Book - Facsimile: John Mackersey 1826-1892, Victoria Journal 1857-1867, 2014
This diary relates to the property Kenilworth which is situated near Cavendish, 16 miles from Hamilton on the Wannon River. It was taken up by Thomas Norris in 1839 and originally carried 800 cattle and 20000 sheep on 63000 acres. By 1858 it was in the hands of John Mackersey and Thomas Bostock. In 1859 it belonged outright to John Mackersey who was there until 1870. He was considered a worthy son of a Presbyterian minister and was well regarded in the district for his contributions in church, sport and sheep breeding... However he did not do well and lost the property before going to New Zealand in 1870.This diary has detailed entries over a number of years which provides an insight into life in the 1860’s. It has a significance for Warrnambool as John Mackersey and Augustus Bostock were at one stage business partners.Hard green cover with gold lettering. 534 pages of facsimile copied diary entries. Photograph, Hurst's Bridge, c.1912
The area of Hurstbridge was originally known as Hurst’s-bridge after the timber bridge built over the Diamond Creek near Hurst’s station in late 1881/early 1882 on Hurstbridge-Arthurs Creek Road, Hurstbridge. It was built by John McDonald, of Arthur's Creek and was demolished and replaced in 1917 by a reinforced concrete arch bridge designed by John Monash. Part of a slide show presentation "Bridges & Waterways of the Shire" by Russell Yeoman to the 13 September 1989 Society meeting. The presentation included slides of historic photos from the Shire of Eltham Pioneers collections as well as several recent views. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Sir John did his duty (Don Woodward Collection), Barwick, Garfield, 1983
The Whitlam ALP government came to power in 1972 after 23 years in opposition. Whitlam's government was aspirational in terms of its social justice and equality agenda. The government was dismissed on 11 November 1975 by the governor general, Sir John Kerr; this act was unprecedented. The book is written by Garfield Barwick who was a high court judge; Barwick provided advice to Sir John Kerr at the time. The author defends the appropriateness/legality of Kerr's role and decision making at the time of the dismissal. The ALP lost the election held on 13 December that was caused by the 1975 double dissolution/constitutional crisis.Relevance to Australian political and constitutional history. Book; 129 pages. The State Revenue Office (SRO) is a $5 million world-class purpose built revenue collection facility employing over 200 people. SRO relocated 40% of its operations from Melbourne to the Ballarat Technology Park, creating more than 180 employment opportunities for skilled people from the region. The Ballarat facility houses the majority of the SRO's operations capability and utilises state-of-the-art technology. The BTP was selected to host the SRO after a feasibility study revealed that Ballarat was an ideal regional centre to support this important government function. The BTP enables the SRO to be in close proximity to an existing cluster of technology based enterprises and organisations, as well as education, training and research opportunities presented to SRO staff at the nearby Federation University.
