Type of switch fitted to Melbourne W class trams for switching the line breaker on or off. This switch controls power to the line breaker activated by the tram controller. Had been fitted to the Restaurant tram No. 3 or Cuthberts 939. Was found to be defective - the power was available to the controller even when switched to the OFF position, that is, failed unsafe. Was replaced 4/11/2015 from a spare. Has the name of the manufacturer on the cover. Photo shows W class tram 301 derailed at the intersection of Coldblo Road, the entry into Malvern Tram Depot, and Glenferrie Road. The tram has struck and partly demolished the verandah of a building in front of it. Many uniformed employees are standing around, an overhead tower truck can be seen at the front of the tram. A towing chain is on the ground. The tram has the destination on the side set to Esplanade. The tram was converted to a W2 class tram during Jan. 1930. There is one horse drawn cab parked in Lonsdale Street near the cast iron urinal structure along with a fruit vendor's carts by the hotel entry. On the left side is a cable tram in Collins Street waiting to cross Swanston Street. An early MMTB bus is also heading south in Swanston Street with motorcycle and side car behind it. The cable tram signal is visible just to the left of the bus. This signal would continue to control all tram movements through the intersection until the insulation of modern motor traffic lights around 1929. On the left of photo is the imposing Queen Victoria building demolished in the mid 1960's to make way for the City Square.
