This is a page containing portrait profile sketches of 14 members of Fortuna’s cricket team, possibly taken from a booklet published at Bendigo’s Land Headquarters Cartographic Company circa 1943. Fortuna’s involvement in the Bendigo community and local sporting competitions in the 1940s is covered in page 31 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. These six photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. These three formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID joined the Australian Army on the 10th of June 1940 and after rising through the ranks, his career culminated in his appointment as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1969 to 1970. Despite suffering debilitating poor health during his appointment, LTCOL Sprenger MBE, MID led the Regiment on the unit’s first Freedom of Entry Parade held in Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. For more information on this occasion, refer to item 6020.8P. Unfortunately, LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID passed away on the 5th of December 1970 and was farewelled with a full military funeral. He is remembered as a model of good leadership. This collection of four photos was most likely taken at Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in 1988. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. These four photographs of orthorectification equipment in operation were taken at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, 1988. This set of 11 colour photographs were taken at a drill rehearsal probably in October 1990 for the Army Survey Regiment’s Freedom of Entry parade at Bendigo. WO1 Colin Cuskelly was acting as the escorted Bendigo Lord Mayor on an inspection of the troops. The Freedom of Entry to the City took place on the 26th of October 1990. This was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The parade was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985 and 1995. See Item 6248P for a photograph taken and more detail of the Freedom of Entry parade. This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors constructing Lithographic Squadron’s new Printing Building at Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1989. The building was purpose built to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster Press printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1977 was the second time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, the Mayor of Bendigo and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.This photograph of the Army Survey Regiment was taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo March in 1977.
