The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment on the 20th of April 1970. The unit was granted for the first time the privilege of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The Freedom of Entry Parade occurred on the 14th of June 1970 led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bill Sprenger MID, MBE; the unit marched up View St in the CBD to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Jeffrey and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. A ceremonial scroll was presented to the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment citing the occasion and was proudly displayed in the entry foyer to Fortuna Villa up to October 2008. This is a set of thirty photographs of an Open Day held at the AHQ Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970. It’s evident in these photos there was also a technical tour for dignitaries through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. It is known an Open Day coincided with the Freedom of Entry to the City Parade, an honour that was conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment and held on the 14th of June 1970. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. July 29,1962: the premises and plant of the Bendigo Advertiser were almost totally destroyed by fire. Damage to the premises, which were opened only six month prior was 250,000 pounds. One of the unfortunate losses was the newspaper's files dating back to 1853. Luckily, copies were kept in duplicate by the Bendigo City Council of the time. With the help of a number of regional print shops, the Advertiser still managed to produce a newspaper the next day. The Central Deborah Mine closed it's mining operations in 1954. The complete nature of the site encouraged the Bendigo City Council to purchase the site in 1970 in order that it be preserved. In 1971 the Bendigo Trust was formed and under its auspices the surface was opened to tourists in 1971' Extensive work enabled Level 2, underground to be opened to the public. This was followed in 1998 by Underground Level 3 Adventure tours. Murray Comrie Collection. George Minto (b.1824 in Harwick, Scotland) was engineer at the Flour Mill in Tarnagulla, was Mayor of Tarnagulla Borough Council for a time and was engineer of the Shire of Marong for twenty years. For 13 years he occupied the position of surveyor to the Bendigo City Council. In his later life he lived in Kangaroo Flat. Whilst living there, on the 28th November 1914, he died, aged 90 and a half years. This photograph is a reasonable image created from a historic news source (unknown). Alec Craig was elected to the Barkly Ward seat on the Bendigo City Council in March 1954 after the resignation of Cr J A Michelsen. He became Mayor in 1956 and served from 1956 -57, 1963 - 64 and 1973 -74. Councillor Craig first posited the idea of Hargreaves Street becoming a shopping mall but retired from council in 1976 before the idea was executed. Alec Craig was the foundation President of the Provincial cities and Town Association of Victoria and President of the Bendigo Base Hospital in 1973. He was awarded an O.B.E. in 1973 for outstanding public service. As result of council work it has been necessary to remove the 900 mm water main, excavate lower and replace the water main. In the first photo Ganger one operator Mr. Allen Parker at work on the main trunk water feed while Mr. Paul Somerville operated the rock breaker and Mr. Max Welsford operated the angle grinder.
