Soon after the outbreak of World War Two, the British Government requested experienced forestry soldiers from Australia, New Zealand and Canada to be deployed in France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. The first Forestry Company (2/1) was based in Sydney with men from NSW, Queensland and South Australia, led by Captain Cyril Richard Cole, a professional forester from the Australian Capital Territory. The second Forestry Company (2/2) included many Forests Commission staff, local sawmillers and experienced bushmen from Victoria, WA and Tasmania including veterans of the First World War. They were led by Captain Andrew Leonard (Ben) Benallack, a graduate from the Victorian School of Forestry in 1922. Both Forestry Companies sailed from Fremantle on the Stratheden in late May 1940 and landed in England not long after the evacuation of Dunkirk. The foresters were recalled to Australia at the insistence of Prime Minister John Curtin in late 1943 because of the War in the Pacific. After reequipping and some refresher training in jungle warfare at Kapooka the 2/2 Forestry Company was deployed to Lae in Papua New Guinea in May 1944. These labels come from the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. This factory was opened in 1888 and, after Cobden, was the second co-operative butter factory in Victoria. Today the factory is owned by the Canadian dairy company, Saputo. It is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. These labels are of interest as they show the type of label used by the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory some decades ago. These are six labels printed in a continuous fashion on the one page. The labels have black printing and a perforated line down one side for easy detaching of the labels. The series from which the photograph is drawn provides a snapshot by a commercial photographic studio of specific street works in Kew as well as providing examples of public works infrastructure being commissioned by local government in the 1970s. These labels come from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy who sold Lectar Company products and used a lighthouse image as his logo. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in the ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as ‘the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria’. Kennedy was the Vice-President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs n Warrnambool. He also made local perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time – Nellie Melba, Federation etc. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house in Canterbury Road (“Ivanhoe”) still stand today.These labels are of some interest as they are associated with the Warrnambool business of the chemist, R.F.Kennedy. Founded in1903 when William E.Sessions and some of his family took over E.N.Welch Co. in Forestville. E.N.Welch Manufacturing Company used a local foundry to produce their castings. The foundry owner's son,William E.Sessions, took an interest in horology and ,along with other Sessions family members, bought controlling interest in the E.N.Welch Company., which was a joint stock corporation formed July 6th 1864 to succeed an older private firm who made clocks under the name of E.N.Welch. Elisha N. Welch (1809-1887),had been making clocks at a factory on East Main Street Forestville Conneticut after taking over J.C.Browns bankrupt business around 1856.Under William Sessions management the firm produced all components of their clocks including movements,cases,dials,artworks and castings.In 1930 the company expanded to produce electric clocks,timers for radios,televisions and other devices as well as their traditional brass mechanicial movements.In 1956 Sessions was absorbed by another company while retaining the name and in 1969 the business went into liquidation.Clock is made of black wood with Corinthian style columns,three set on each front corner. These are black metal, and show remains of gilt paint on top of columns.On the base of the clock is carved decoration with similar carvings on each of the four corners of square around clock face.Dial is cream with Roman numerals. the hands are set in gilt centre piece.Below the 12 is the name WELCH.The glass dial cover is edged in gilt.
