James Andrew Kangaroo Ground, 1870 "James Andrew, Whittlesea, born in East Palford, Devonshire, England, in 1827, arrived in Adelaide in February 1850 per ship Lady McCaughton and almost immediately sailed in a coasting vessel to Melbourne, where the first work he undertook was clearing earth from a stone quarry in Collingwood. He next carried stones for masons engaged in building the Bishop’s Palace, and then was employed in Cambellfield mowing hay. He was at Saltwater River on Black Thursday, and afterwards took a little farm at Darebin Creek, remaining there for four years. He went up to Kangaroo Ground in 1859 and lived there until he bought his present property at Whittlesea, a farm of between 300 and 400 acres. He has been twice married, and had a family of six children." "Andrew, W. B. Eltham, is a native of England, born in 1822. Coming out to Australia in 1842, he lived in Brighton, Victoria for fifteen years, when he re-visited England for a year. Returning to Victoria fourteen or fifteen years ago, he commenced storekeeping at Eltham, where he has carried on that business ever since. The card was probably sent as a Christmas gift to an unknown recipient by "H & GB", presumably a married couple. The two women in the photo might be known to sender and receiver, or might even be the receivers. The scene is suspected to be in the grounds of the Country Club at Emerald, Victoria.As the card is clearly dated, and the figures clearly named, it is a record of people resident in Emerald. From it we can make out some details of their dress and the physical surroundings of the time.B/W photograph mounted on embossed cardboard with crimped edges. It depicts two women standing on a small bridge over a creek in dense vegetation. There are trees in the background and ferns in the foreground. The newly constructed re-inforced concrete arched bridge across the Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge designed by John Monash. Eltham Shire shared the cost of the construction of the bridge with Heidelberg and Whittlesea Shires. The bridge was officially opened on 3rd November 1917. Part of a slide show presentation "Bridges & Waterways of the Shire" by Russell Yeoman to the 13 September 1989 Society meeting. The Wattle Valley Estate was first advertised in August 1925 as weekend building allotments by the Greater Melbourne Land and Development Company. Advertised from £28.10.0 or £60 per block. In August 1926, 30 picked allotments of 60x150 feet were put up for auction Saturday August 14, 1926 with frontages to Valley View Road and Fawkner Crescent advertised in the “Heart of the Glorious Wattle Country” and “Within 15 Minutes of the Newly Electrified Railway Station”. The Advertiser on August 13, 1926 in an article promoting the auction stated “the estate is regarded as one of the best in the district, and will be sold practically without reserve.” It is noted that an advertisement running in The Argus February 22, 1951 offered the remaining 16 blocks for sale at £12.10.0 or £200 the lot. Postcard view of pedestrian log bridge in Kinglake National Park. The log bridge over Johnston's Creek is said to have been built to allow the timber tramline to cross the creek. The bridge was destroyed in the 1926 bushfires. Construction of the new concrete bridge over the Diamond Creek on Main Road, Eltham, c.May 1926. Viewed from present day Wingrove Park. The original long suspension bridge over the Diamond Creek on Main Road at Eltham collapsed during flooding of the Diamond Creek on October 13 and 14, 1923. The original bridge was built around 1840 for the coach road when Cobb & Co.'s coach was the only conveyance between Eltham and Melbourne. Widespread damage was done in Melbourne and surrounding areas by floods resulting from the overflow of the Yarra at many points along its banks. A temporary bridge rigged up was severely damaged by the flooding of the creek and was closed to vehicular traffic in April 1924. A new concrete bridge was constructed to replace it and by May 1926 all the concrete piles and abutments had been completed. To the left of picture is the Main Road Bridge over the Diamond Creek in Eltham South when the Diamond Creek was in flood. The Yarra also was in flood. In early December 1934 the "Greatest flood in the history of the Yarra" occured, according to The Argus newspaper. Bridges and houses were swept away with hundreds of people left homeless across the state. Share certificate issued by New Gippsland Boulder Mine - operating at Errinundra and receipt for Herbert, Eric W. Receipt is for amount of four pounds - signed by Bird, W. Prospectus was printed in 1934 at office of Snowy River Mail - 4 page booklet. Gold, copper and silver were the target minerals.The crusher from the Boulder Mine is now at the Slab Hut in Orbost. The first Gippsland Boulder Co.,was at Boulder Creek – 13 miles north of Club Terrace, within 2 miles of Errinundra River. The company registered in January 1898 and commenced crushing in September with a 10-head battery. In the first nine months’ yields totalled 1,418 oz from 972 tons.There was a tramway between the mine workings and the battery.The crusher from the Boulder Mine is now at the Slab Hut in Orbost. This document is a reference for gold mining and exploration in the Far East Gippsland area. William Garnet Macalister's parents, Thomas Mewburn and Ruth Hannah Macalister, owned and operated "Orbost House". William Garnet Macalister was born at Bairnsdale in 1884 and at Sale, aged 72, in 1958. He operated a line of coaches conveying passengers and parcels from Orbost to Cabbage Tree Creek, Club Terrace, Cann River and surrounding districts. The service departed from Orbost on Wednesdays and from the Cann River Hotel on Fridays. He was also Orbost's first milkman. He married Ethel Roda SAYERS in 1909. John Waghorn was an amateur historian, an authority on the history of Victoria's postal services. He could tell you how mail was delivered in the high country in the 1880s, where the town of Gobur was, or when the overland Melbourne-Sydney mail service began. He admitted that his hobby has got a little out of hand. He had 30 filing cabinets, and indexes of more than 70,000 postal workers over the past 160 years crammed into three rooms at his home. 1864 photograph of the Coffer Dam in the River Yarra situated (approximately) opposite Whipstick Gully. Remains of bridge built in 1860(?) wrecked by 1863 flood in background. Reproduced page 29 of ‘Pioneers & Painters’ Gold was first discovered in this area at Andersons Creek (Warrandyte) in June 1851 by Louis Michel. Discoveries north of the Yarra did not occur until about 1854. Although it took some months for a true rush to develop it was not long before alluvial workings were being carried on in most of the Shire of Eltham. The last area in which gold was discovered was Kinglake. As the gold became harder to find, deep mining took over from alluvial diggings in the gullies. Perhaps the most extensive of the deep workings was the Diamond Creek Mine just outside the boundary of the Shire. This form of mining was continued into the 1930s. There are believed to be some mines in the area still capable of producing gold but present prices make working these uneconomical. Some gold is still found by weekend prospectors. The area of Hurstbridge was originally known as Hurst’s-bridge after the timber bridge built over the Diamond Creek near Hurst’s station in late 1881/early 1882. A large group of people can be seen strolling across the timber bridge over the Diamond Creek on Hurstbridge-Arthurs Creek Road, Hurstbridge. The railway was extended from Eltham to Hurstbridge in 1912. This bridge is most likely near Allendale Road, Diamond Creek. Sabina and William Henry Mills lived at "Golden Valley", Upper Diamond Creek (Wattle Glen) and had nine children in total. Here they are pictured with seven young children. Sabina died in 1916 aged 57 and William died in 1921 age 64. They are buried together at Diamond Creek (Nillumbik) cemetery.
