When the Harcourt Valley was the subject of route selection /environmental effects survey in connection with the upgrade of the Calder Highway into Freeway the Harcourt Valley Heritage Committee enumerated and researched the unique collection of granite homes to be found in the valley. The publication gives a short account of the builders and illustrates the various techniques of building in stone. Advocacy by the Harcourt Valley Heritage Committee ensured the retention, in the face of demolition threat, of a unique collection of homes, many owner-built and of vernacular architecture. To commemorate the Centenary of the Great War of 1914-1918, a number of Society Members decided to compile a list of all those who served (in the various conflicts) and were either born, worked or lived in the Ballan Shire at the time. It was noted that the existing Cenotaph outside the Ballan Post Office was not entirely accurate as some names were missing and others were not from the area, thus there was a need to correct the record. Thousands of hours of research resulted in as complete a list as possible of 810 names and the printing of this book. Two copies (each of three volumes) were printed. A4 size including photographs and a map.This publication tells the story of the village of Mitta Junction which was established in about 1920 on the Victorian side of the Hume Dam construction site. The town was built to house workers and their families during the construction of the Hume Weir. It included houses, a shop, hall and school as well as tennis courts. After the completion of the weir the village and all its contents was sold at auction in June 1936 for £7000. The Mitta Junction school continued to operate until the mid 1980s.
