Orm Cook gave The Age the photograph in 1981 as the round arches on the bridge were about to be removed.A bridge crossing of the Murray River was needed by 1877. It linked Echuca and Moama in a more tangible way. Established in 1857, the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum provided care for the aged and destitute. In 1886 a lying in hospital was included and was subsequently called the Benevolent Asylum and Lying in Hospital. This continued until 1937 when the Lying in hospital was discontinued and the institution became the Benevolent Home. From 1963 it was called the Bendigo Home and Hospital for the Aged until a further name change in 1988 saw it become the Anne Caudle Centre.Hardcover book with a woven cover and negative photo of the home in black and gold. Ann Holden married George Evans at the age of 16 in 1843. She lived at Emu Bottom and died in 1893 at the age of 67. Provides a report from The Age, 28-11-1989 written by Ingrid Swendsen, about the rejection by the Planning and Environment Minister , Tom Roper to protect the former cable tram winding or Engine house on the corner of Bridge and Punt Roads Richmond, despite the recommendation of the Historic Buildings Council to add it to the register. This is the 1985-6 Annual Report for Lyndoch Home and Hospital for the Aged, Warrnambool. It contains lists of Board Members, a President’s Report, photographs, Lyndoch’s Aims, financial reports and a list of Life Governors. Lyndoch Home for the Aged was established in 1952 and has developed with a wide range of facilities for the aged since that date. The original Lyndoch property near the mouth of the River Hopkins was owned by a Melbourne tea merchant, George Rolfe, who bought the land when there were on the site only a couple of cottages and a larger building which had been a school, Warrnambool Grammar, run by Henry Kemmis. Rolfe acquired the land in the 1870s and named the property Lyndoch after the town in the Barossa Valley where he had lived. He owned Lyndoch for 44 years ad it was his stepdaughter Florence Lake who built in the 1920s the bungalow known as Lyndoch which forms the original building of Lyndoch Home for the Aged. Today the facility is called Lyndoch Living. This 1985-6 report is kept for the benefit of researchers wanting details of the history of Lyndoch over the past 30 or 40 years.This is a booklet with a plasticized white cover with a black and white photograph of a Lyndoch building on the front cover. There are eight double-sided pages with printed material and photographs. James Alexander Robertson was born 14th June, 1855, at Pentridge. the Coburg area which was known as Pentridge at the time, and prior to the building of the gaol. His parents were James Thomson Robertson and Esther (nee Hale), At age 20 James became the first selector on the Snowy River at Lochend. He took up Lots 1, 2 and 3, in the Parish of Newmerella in 1875; with his selection being ratified on May 1st, 1876. The selection included hill and river flat land in the area near where Icy Creek enters the Snowy River. James gradually improved and farmed the property; he cleared and drained Icy Creek and constructed the first known flood-gate on the Snowy River. To meet his farming commitments he supplemented his income by working on the construction and maintenance of roads and drains in the Newmerella area. He gained a contract with the Bairnsdale Shire council to construct the first road cutting down Burn’s Hill at Newmerella. His tender was for £16 ($32), and it took him, with four others, two months to complete the contract. He was single, and, after his untimely death at aged 29, in 1884, his parents and surviving unmarried sisters and brothers moved from Sarsfield to take over his selection at Lochend.
