Mary-Lou began exhibiting in the mid 1980s and over the years has been involved in producing unique pieces as well as developing a large range of domestic ware. In 1984, six months after graduating from a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Phillip Institute of Technology, Mary-Lou was invited to present a solo exhibition at Devise Gallery in South Melbourne. This objective, she says, compelled her to find a studio and was an incentive to focus on developing her ceramic practice independently.Mary-Lou Pittard holds close ties to the Shire of Nillumbik - living and working within Eltham. Her Eltham North Mudbrick Studio employed 5 assistants until recently when Mary-Lou and partner Chris Pittard have scaled down operations. They now produce everything themselves and find that this enables them to focus on producing unique, sculptural ceramic works. Mary-Lou is currently exploring the fine qualities of porcelain and combining these with her ongoing passion for decorative colour and form. 'Decorative Bowl' is a wheel-thrown/moulded bowl, oblong in shape and has been manipulated by hand. Narrow sections have been incised from the main body, perhaps a practical design feature for air circulation, and the rim has been altered to form a jagged edge. Bold colourful shapes decorate the interior of the bowl. This photograph is a "snap shot" in time circa 1950s detailing the rural environment before the effects of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Scheme altered the basic rural setting of the valley. The golfing fairway was being mapped out on previous grazing land, before the laying of a golf course, for use by the construction workers and auxiliary administration employees of the Victorian State Electricity Commission. This photograph details a dramatic period in time which saw an enormous change to the exclusively rural area of the Kiewa Valley region in the mid 1900s. This change presented both physical and mental challenges to the existing quiet rural inhabitants of the valley. The State of Victoria had to make adjustments to the changing demands imposed by population and industrial expansions. The development of cleaner energy supplies to a growing population has its downside ,which ever way the intrusion into the "natural" landscape is made.Black and white photograph detailing surveyor posts for construction of golf course. This photograph can be dated to 1878-79 because according to Chartered Scoundrel's by Pat Grainger, Scott's Hotel only operated during those years. The National Bank of Australasia at the right of the photograph was designed by Leonard TERRY of Terry and Oakden, Architects and was constructed in 1874. It was subsequently extended to a design by architect George JOBBINS in 1889. Standard Victorian Railways Brake Van (Guards Van) originally Z 448 built at Newport Workshops & body built by Grimmond & Party butty gang. Entered traffic on 23rd March 1914. Altered to ZL448 incorporating long travel draft gear, 28th November 1961. Off Register on 10th August 1982 & sold to Echuca City Council 3rd September 1982 This is an example of the most numerous type of brake van used by Victorian Railways over a very long period. Brake vans would not have been a common sight at the Wharf as the line to the Wharf was operated as a siding from Echuca Station, so a brake van was not required. It is possible that a shunter walked ahead of the train to and from the wharf. This vehicle is significant. However a large number survive in operable condition around Victoria. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. The series of drawings in the Picken Collection are invaluable assets for identifying architectural features and styles. The hotel was built some time shortly after 1842 by John Cahill, who arrived in the colony in 1842 from Thurles in Tipperary, Ireland. The building although much altered with render covering the original \blue stone structure is on the south-west corner of Macedon and Jackson Streets. The hotel was called the Ball Court because Cahill also had a hand-ball court set up behind the hotel.Originally five hotels were built along Macedon Street between Jackson Creek and Evans Street. This is a piece of music composed by Idabelle Firestone (1875-1954), an American composer and songwriter. She was born in Michigan and wrote many popular songs including, ‘Melody of Love’, ‘Bluebirds’ and ‘You are the Song in my Heart’. She was married to Harvey Firestone of the Firestone Tyre Company. This company sponsored the long-running radio and T.V. program called ‘The Voice of Firestone’ which had a 46 piece orchestra and aired classical and popular songs of the day. Richard Crooks (1900-1972), who sang and recorded this song, was a well-known American tenor who specialized in French and Italian opera and was associated with the New York Metropolitan Opera Company for many years. He was the host of ‘The Voice of Firestone’ from 1928 to 1945 and sang patriotic songs and popular hits etc. This copy of ‘In My Garden’ was sold at the shop of Miss H. M. Lindsay of 101 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. This shop is known to have operated in the late 1920s up to 1935 and was at first (in the 1920s) located at 180 Timor Street. This item is of some significance as an example of the type of music popular in the 1930s and an example of the work of Idabelle Firestone. It also has local significance as it was sold by a Warrnambool music store. This is a four page piece of music printed on seven sides (cover and five pages of music). The pages are cream-coloured, discoloured in places, with black printed musical notation and a back page printed in black containing advertisements for three other songs. The front cover has a sepia sketch of a woman (19th century or olde-worlde style) carrying a bunch of flowers and looking over a garden with an archway. There is a stamp (H. M. John Bulmer spent forty years of his life as missionary to Aboriginal people in Victoria, in 1855 devoting his activities to communities on the Murray, but most of his life was spent at Lake Tyers where he established a Church of England mission in 1862, In his later years he wrote a series of thirteen papers in which he recorded his observations on the life and times of the people to whom he ministered. Rhodonite is a reddish-pink manganese silicate material and often contains iron, magnesium and calcium. It is usually found in metamorphic rocks (rocks which have been altered by heat, pressure or chemical process). It can range in size from tiny to massive. Because of their composition they are not suitable for use in jewellery because they are hard enough. It is quite rare to find, though has been found in Australia, North America, South America and Europe.This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Many of these specimens were sent to research and collecting organisations across Australia, including the Burke Museum, to educate and encourage further study. This specimen is a palm shaped piece of loellingite within rhodonite. It is mostly reddish-pink coloured, with flecks of light and dark grey. Loellingite is a grey iron arsenide which often forms into crystal shapes. It is mostly found in mesothermal veins (caused by immense heat) with sulfides or in limestone. These tickets were a replacement for the MetroCard Off Peaks introduced in 1980. However, the times of availability were now altered to being valid from 9am weekdays, but more importantly, could be used for return rail travel anytime that day. B&W photo of Bert (Gilbert William) and Minnie (Williamina Wilson) Sutton (daughter of Charles Macauley and Minnie Gray) standing outside their original home in Belgrave Heights. The photo shows the couple standing at their post-and-wire front fence at their property in Lockwood Road. The house was next door to Edward's store. Bert is in shirtsleeves and Minnie is wearing a cardigan over a dress. Their house is a single gabled house of weatherboard and fibro sheeting with an L-shaped open verandah. After purchasing the house Bert altered it, eventually enclosing the verandah and turning it into a sleepout. The house has been extensively altered since but is still standing in Lockwood Rd. The block is treed and the garden appears to be rather wild. A tiled roofed building is behind the house and to the left, possibly a garage. On the nature strip in front of the Suttons' house is a wooden bench, and attached to a tree are the signs, "Lockwood House" (with a hand pointing right), "To golf links" (with an arrow pointing right) and "Central Park Tennis Courts" (with an arrow pointing left). The sun is shining. Bert, who was a carpenter, died in 1969 and Minnie died in 1977. Copy of original photo donated to our society by Kath Oram, a founding member.

Alonzo Box, who lived in Oakleigh, was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box, a pioneer settler of Dendy's Special Survey 1841 who purchased 'Box Cottage ' in 1865 and lived there until 1914. Alonzo Box married Mary Kloster/ Closter in 1918. On the Marriage Certificate Mary Box has spelt "Closter" with a "C" and not the "K" of her German heritage. This marriage was taking place during World War 1. Many immigrants would have altered their name at that time. The Box family were early pioneers of the district and raised their family in reconstructed 'Box Cottage'. They established a market garden and sold produce to the Melbourne markets for the colony's increasing population.A large, glass covered, wooden-framed, wedding photograph of Alonzo and Mary Box (nee Kloster/ Closter),married June 12th 1918 is displayed in the reconstructed 'Box Cottage' Museum, Joyce Park, Ormond, Victoria.
