Photograph: Julia Gillard and Betty Borchers A collection of busts of all past Australian Prime Ministers is displayed in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. This photograph was taken when Julia Gillard unveiled her sculpture on 14 October 2014. Only two ex-Prime Ministers (including Gillard) have attended their own unveilings. Gillard was a lawyer before entering politics. She was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia from 2010 to 2013 and the first Australian female prime minister. Kevin Rudd successfully challenged Gillard's leadership in 2013 and he went on to lose the election. Julia Gillard resigned from parliament following the leadership challenge. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary. Photograph: Norm Borchers with Colin Cleary Colin Cleary is the author of "Ballarat Labor". The photograph is taken at the book launch at Ballarat Trades Hall. Norm Borchers contributed many stories to Cleary's book. Several copies of the book are held at Ballarat Trades Hall and are available for loan. Cleary also wrote a book called "Bendigo Labor". Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. He was a long time supporter of Ballarat Trades Hall. Cuthberts was a law firm in Ballarat that was established by Sir Henry Cuthbert in 1855. In 2013, the firm amalgamated with another law practice, Harwood Andrews. The mill known as Woodward Timber Products commenced business in 1937 and closed in 2002, employing up to 40 people at one time. Don Woodward worked at the mill for over 50 years. The Ballarat School of Mines was founded in 1870. The book covers the first 112 years of the School's history. The school offered courses in engineering, geology, education, business studies, wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying.
