The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. Wangaratta Art Gallery
Print, James Jacques Joseph Tissot, Berthe, 1883
James Tissot is most famous for his artwork that depicts the European bourgeois society of the late 19th century. This societal period is often referred to as La Belle Époque, where affluent bourgeoisie living created a complicated mode of manners and dress. This subject matter used in his art made Tissot popular with the bourgeois society, however it made him unpopular with critics who deemed his works as of loose morals due to his subject matter. Tissot’s art style of Realism also put him at odds with his fellow artists and friends such as Degas and Manet who were greats of the European Impressionist movement. This print was made using the printmaking technique of etching, which allowed Tissot to make multiply prints of a particular artwork to sell on mass at a more affordable price to the general population who wished to emulate the bourgeoisie lifestyle of the wealthy.RealismRural City of Wangaratta Collection, Purchased with funds from the Wangaratta Art CouncilA rectangular portrait etching of a 19th century European young lady dressed in her best attire seated in a fashionable manner, printed in black ink on white paper. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Postcard, c. Early 1900s
Taken in the early 1900s, the postcard depicts two girls dressed in old style, white knee length dress which was common for this period for young women. This compared to the ankle length styles which were acceptable for adult women. We can also see an example of early bridge construction and engineering, notably made from timber rather than from stone or steel, noted in the postcard as Snow's Bridge. Sepia rectangular postcard printed on card Obverse: Snow's Bridge/Beechworth Reverse: Dear Julie/ I received your pretty PB/ We haven't gone away yet. Mr Stokes/ asked me were you going to be/ married. He wished you luck/ (I wonder/ if he meant it.) We sent the Magpie to Annie to-day. I haven't got any/ word about going to a [unknown]/ yet. We had a great Friendly Societies/ day yesterday but it rained a bit/ Sally is going to get a [illegible] silk/ dress. When are you to be married?/ Mr Pounceby is back at Allen's shop./ [unknown]. We are going to Belle's for a [unknown] if we can. With Love from Lilly. bridge, beechworth, snow's bridge, children, childhood, postcard
