The writer states he was not involved in the incident as he was serving at the fire support base, not the battle front.An envelope and a two paged letter written on Australian Forces Vietnam letterhead paper, dated Sunday 1st March. The envelope is addressed to Mis D Maschette and the letter starts off with "Dear De". It is written in blue ink. The envelope has a red and blue striped border with the "Air Mail" symbol in the top left hand corner. A map of Vietnam is located under the air mail symbol. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. The first fire engine house was in Liebig Street and carters were required to carry water to fire scenes. In 1889 the Council built a new Fire Station on Liebig Street and Warrnambool hosted its own Annual Demonstration in 1894. In 1891 the volunteer brigade became part of the Country Fire Brigade. The Fire Station relocated to Raglan Parade in 1915 and then to Timor Street in 1961. In 1989 the Brigade moved back to Raglan Parade. This booklet is a memento of the State Championships that were held in Warrnambool to mark 150 years of community service to Warrnambool by the Warrnambool Fire Brigade. The Alpine bushfires started on 8 January 2003, a day of Total Fire Ban. Lightning ignited 87 fires in the North-East and East Gippsland regions. Eight of these fires were unable to be contained; they joined together to form the largest fire in Victoria since the Black Friday fires in 1939. The majority of the area burnt in Victoria was public land, 1.19 million hectares of parks and forests, including 60 per cent of the Alpine National Park and 81 per cent of the Mt Buffalo National Park. Firefighting efforts were made difficult in hard to access, remote forest terrain.
