Print - Landscape, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron, 1908-mid-20th century
Famous French artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1796-1875, was trained in the classical landscape style. His inspiration came from his travels around France and Italy. He developed a soft poetic or romantic style of work which became very popular. He had the skills to bring'light' into his paintings. The original oil on canvas painting by Corot is held at The National Gallery in the United Kingdom. It is titled 'Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron' and is one of twenty-seven of his works at the Gallery. Corot visited Coubon, east of Paris, many times. In 1873 during his stay there he sketched the scene that became the basis of this painting. This reproduction print was made by The Medici Society Ltd., founded in England 1908. The Society's aim was to make artwork affordable and available to the general public. The name Medici was chosen to honour the support and encouragement given to artists in the 15th century by Lorenzo de' Medici (1449 - 1492), known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and his family. His profile is on the company's trademark. The Medici Society still produces Fine Art reproduction prints as well as selling original works. The print was framed by Westminster Art Gallery in Camperdown, London. The handwritten text on the back of the artwork adds some background to the artist: Corot was apprenticed to a Draper but changed to his profession at the age of 22 years. When he went from a poor artist to achieving wealth and fame he generously supported his less fortunate fellow artists. Corot found that the light and shade in a natural scene meant more to a landscape painter that what could be learned by following the principles of the academies. Corot was 51 years old before he sold his first picture. He though that he was the only artist that could really paint 'light'. The National Gallery, Victoria, has an original oil on canvas by Corot "the bent tree", created 1856-1860. It is in a similar style to this print "Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron", which was likely to have been painted around the same time. This high quality reproduction print was produced in the early-to-mid 1900;'s. This advancement in technology allowed everyday people to own and enjoy the fine art that was previously only accessible to the wealthy. The print is significant for its association with the famous 19th century artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot.Print of a painting by Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, depicting a landscape with two buildings amongst trees and a boatman in the marshy foreground. The print is famed in carved timber with a cream matt, behind glass. there is an inscription on bottom right of print and further stamped and handwritten inscriptions of the reverse paper. 1855 Stephen Charman donated land to the Methodist Church so that a School could be established to educate the children of the early settler market gardeners and farmers in the Cheltenham area . Education was valued by the general community and as well as schools they established mechanics Institutes and Libraries in Moorabbin Shire. Cheltenham State School No. 84 was among the first schools in Melbourne. Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. The enrolment was 36 pupils with Mr Frederick Meeres as Teacher. 1863 the school is called Beaumaris Common School No 84 with 70 pupils and Walter Meeres as Teacher. 1869 another 2 acres in Charman Road were granted by the Education Board and brick building built . 1872 State School 84 Beaumaris was increasing enrollments and 1878 a new brick school was built to accommodate 174 pupils and the name changed to Cheltenham State School No.84 1894 Mentone State School No.2950 amalgamated with Cheltenham SS No.84. 1910 the buildings were in disrepair, overcrowding was increasing and renovations were made 1912 with further additions in 1925 and 1937. Post WW11 extra prefabricated Classrooms were added as enrollment increased to 1038 in 1955.. Cheltenham East State School 4754 was opened as housing development spread over the City of Moorabbin . (J.Larson Sandringham HS) Probably due to the Scottish heritage of many early settlers the Fife & Drum Band was established at the West Beaumaris (Cheltenham) State School . The Fife is similar to the piccolo, and usually made of wood, consisting of a tube with 6 finger holes and an embouchure hole that produces sound when blown across. The fife was used in folk music traditions to accompany dancing by all social classes. Also in the Military where drums accompanied the fife and originally these 'boy soldier ' bands were used to signal manouevres in the field for the infantry. Later Fife & Drum bands were used for marching bands in schools and community groups, 1855 Stephen Charman donated land to the Methodist Church so that a School could be established to educate the children of the early settler market gardeners and farmers in the Cheltenham area . Education was valued by the general community and as well as schools they established mechanics Institutes and Libraries in Moorabbin Shire. Photograph, Black & White Horse drawn scoops earthwork in Moorabbin Shire c1900, c1900
The, horse drawn metal scoop ,guided by a man, was used to clear earth for road making. Well before the introduction of motorised, mechanical graders and trucks the painstaking, labour-intensive work was undertaken by large teams of sturdy men using strong horses such as the draught horse. Roads were needed by the market gardeners to transport their produce to market. Later as the heavy wagon loads continually caused ruts and general degradation of the roadways a Plateway system was installed so that the wagon wheels could roll along the rails thus protecting the roadways. August 31st 2021 Ron Nash, from WA, informs us "The men and horses pulling earth scoops in the photo are not moving earth for road making - they are excavating an "earth tank", or dam, as described in common nomenclature today. This skill was known as "tank sinking", and tank sinkers were active in many rural and remote areas in the 1800's and early 1900's, establishing sizeable dams for important water reserves for community and farm and railway use. With the advent of mechanised equipment such as bulldozers, the trade of tank sinking was still carried out, but on a faster basis. I am a former tank sinker and earth moving contractor, now long retired." Early settlers in Moorabbin Shire had to build the roads, plateways, drains, as the settlement of the land, in Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton, spread and market gardeners need to transport their produce to market. Their most valuable possession was the draught horse that was used for ploughing, drawing carts and these scoops.Black & White photograph showing many horses pulling metal scoops guided by men to move earth for road making in Moorabbin Shire c 1900Back Handwritten Informationplateway, roadworks moorabbin shire, draught horses, metal scoops, paviers, box alonzo, smith j l; chaff cutter, horse drawn carts, toll gates brighton, motor cars 1900, steam engines, early settlers, bentleigh, mckinnon, parish of moorabbin, city of moorabbin, county of bourke, moorabbin roads board, shire of moorabbin, henry dendy's special survey 1841, were j.b.; bent thomas, o'shannassy john, king richard, charman stephen, highett william, ormond francis, maynard dennis, market gardeners, vineyards, orchards -

Functional object - Sewing machine, Wilcox & Gibbs, c1870
Willcox and Gibbs: Serial No. 158679. The Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company was founded in 1857 by James E. A. Gibbs and James Willcox and opened its London Office in 1859 at 135 Regent Street . By 1871 the Company's Chief Office for Europe was at 150 Cheapside, London, this office was later moved (post 1885) to 94 - 96 Wigmore Street, then 37 & 39 Moorgate Street (by 1891 to post 1907) and later 20 Fore Street, London . Right from the initial production the manufacturing of the Company's single thread, chain stitch machine was undertaken by Brown & Sharpe, Rhode Island and this continued up until 1948. A special hand crank mechanism was produced in England for the European market, but the general design of the Willcox & Gibbs remained essentially the same throughout its production. The only major improvement was in 1875 when the glass tension discs were replaced with an automatic tension device which ensured the machine could not get out of adjustment. In addition to the domestic hand and treadle machines the company produced a wide range of industrial models. The Company finally closed in 1973. This Willcox & Gibbs came complete with its wooden carry case. The machine was made in America in the late 1860's but it has the ornate hand crank produced at Coalbrookdale near Telford, England which was, in Victorian times, renown for producing high quality ornate iron castings. This machine has the glass tension discs which were used on domestic models until 1875. The Willcox & Gibbs badge is located on the rear of the base casting and it also has a deep wooden base. The cloth plate has various American patent dates, four dating between 1857 & 1860 relating to J. E. A. Gibbs, three dating between 1860 & 1864 relating to Chas H. Willcox (son of James Willcox), the machine was also licensed under five other patents including the infamous Elias Howe patent of 1846. There are only two English patents one for J. E. A Gibbs and the other for James Willcox. In 1887 a W & G Sewing Machine sold in England for 6 pounds , with its box and bits, at a time when the average wage was less than 10/- shillings per week. The early settlers of Moorabbin Shire had to be self sufficient making their own clothes, tableware, bed coverings, furnishings and equipment. The women were skilled dressmakers and craft workers.Willcox and Gibbs: Serial No. 158679. Jewellery, pearl necklace, 20thC
It is thought that natural pearls form under a set of accidental conditions when a microscopic intruder or parasite enters a bivalve mollusc and settles inside the shell. The mollusc, irritated by the intruder, forms a pearl sac of external mantle tissue cells and secretes the calcium carbonate and conchiolin to cover the irritant. This secretion process is repeated many times, thus producing a pearl. Natural pearls come in many shapes, with perfectly round ones being comparatively rare. In general, cultured pearls are less valuable than natural pearls, whereas imitation pearls have almost no value. Cultured freshwater pearls can often be confused for natural pearls Cultured pearls are the response of the shell to a tissue implant. A tiny piece of mantle tissue (called a graft) from a donor shell is transplanted into a recipient shell, causing a pearl sac to form into which the tissue precipitates calcium carbonate. Some imitation pearls (also called shell pearls) are simply made of mother-of-pearl, coral or conch shell A strand of pearls called a princess length, 43 to 48 cm in length, comes down to or just below the collarbone. A graduated strand of pearls most often has at least 3 mm of differentiation from the ends to the centre of the necklace. In 1867, Frenchman Joseph Monier patented the use of metal reinforced concrete for use in horticultural troughs. Francois Hennebique expanded this idea into a general construction technique including for the construction of bridges bridges with the first bridge built in 1875. In Victoria, Monash and Anderson, representatives of the Australian patent holders and later Victorian patent holders. The Bendigo Monier Bridges were built between 1901 and 1902. Monash's contribution was not in the actual technology but in the promotion and defence of the new technology that was faced by much doubt and scepticism.Ten page booklet with a red and white cardboard cover produced for the Engineering Heritage Recognition Ceremony held on 9th August 2014. This type of steriliser was in use from approximately 1907 onward. Designed for surgeons who frequently moved from hospital to hospital. The body and lid of the steriliser were made from one continuous piece of metal to produce a germ-free surface. Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Metal instrument steriliser. Consists of a rectangular metal container with lid, an internal metal tray, and two spirit burners. The lid has a small wire handle at either end. The internal tray also had two handles and in perforated with holes to allow for drainage. The upper edge of each burner has a series of eighteen holes in the rim. disinfection -
Australian Gliding Museum
Machine - Auto-Tug Engine, 1983 or prior
The 1982 Ford V6 engine, built at the Ford Essex Engine Plant at Windsor in Ontario Canada, was released by Ford for installation in a number of car and light truck models manufactured in Canada, United States, Mexico and Venezula. Production probably exceeded 7 million items. The Australian Gliding Museum’s exhibit was an engine converted for aircraft use that was bought for the Gliding Federation of Australia “Auto-Tug” program from Javelin Aircraft Company in Wichita in USA. “Auto-Tug” was an experimental program sponsored by the Gliding Federation of Australia to equip a glider – sailplane Piper Pawnee PA-25-150 tug with a water-cooled engine to alleviate the costs of running and maintaining the Lycoming engines fitted to Pawnee tugs in Australia. The program began in 1988 and was aimed at obtaining limited certification for converting dedicated glider – sailplane tow planes. The engine equipped with modified intake manifolds produced 198 hp for flight with the same propeller RPM for take-off as the original Lycoming 0-540 engine. However, fuel consumption was halved as the water cooling of the Ford engine enabled quicker descents with throttle closed following the release of the sailplane. Based on the results of GFA’s program, CASA concluded that engine was quite suitable for an aircraft installation and rated it more reliable than the equivalent Lycoming and Continental aircraft engine. The use of the 1982 Ford V6 engine type for Pawnee tug conversions was discontinued when the General Motors LS1 5.7 litre V8 became available. It is understood that a small number of conversions have been done using the LS1 engine. This brief history is based on information obtained from Mike Burns and David Sharples who were involved in the Auto-Tug program from 1988 to 1992. Technical information relating to the 1982 Ford V6 automotive engine is contained in a paper by D.L. Armstrong and G.F. Stirrat of the Engine Engineering Office at Ford. Geoffrey Kaye Museum of Anaesthetic History
Bottle, Ethyl Chloride, Medicinal Chemicals Corporation Pty. Ltd, c. 1932
Ethyl chloride was first used as a general anaesthetic in 1847, by Johann Ferdinand Heyfelder (1798-1869), a German surgeon. Once ethyl chloride became readily available, it was again taken up as a general anaesthetic in the late 1890s (USA). Ethyl chloride evaporates very quickly so that when it is sprayed onto the skin it produces very cold temperatures. “Refrigeration anesthesia”, or cryoanesthesia, refers to the anesthesia produced when the skin is significantly cooled.Due to its rapid onset, ethyl chloride was often used to induce general anaesthesia. It would be followed by a second anaesthetic, such as ether or nitrous oxide, which would be used for the remainder of the procedure.
