Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller was born in Germany on 30 June 1825. Ferdinand was a German-Australian physician, geographer, and a botanist. After passing the pharmaceutical examinations he studied botany at Kiel University. In 1847 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Kiel University.when he was 21 years old for a thesis on the flora of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1847, he moved to Adelaide, Australia and worked as a chemist. From 1848 to 1852 he travelled through the colony, discovering and describing a large number of unknown to Western science plants. He wrote a few papers to German periodicals on botanical subjects. In 1851, Mueller moved to Melbourne, capital of the new colony of Victoria. In 1853, He was appointed Government Botanist for Victoria by Governor Charles La Trobe. In 1873, Ferdinand received an honorary doctorate of the University of Rostock. In 1883, he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales. He published many volumes on the Victorian plants. Many of Australian geographical features were named after him such as: the Mueller Ranges (WA), Muellers Range (Qld), Mount Mueller (in WA, NT, Tas and Vic) and many more. Mueller died in Melbourne on 10 October 1896 and is buried in the St. Kilda Cemetery A green cloth hard cover book. Title and author's name is engraved in gold on spine. Stereo-graphs were popular 1850 - 1930 Most stereoscopic methods present two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. Stereo-graphs feature two photographs or printed images positioned side by side about two and half inches apart, one for the left eye and one for the right. When a viewer uses a stereoscope, a device for viewing stereo-graphs, the two-dimensional images are combined by the brain to give the perception of 3D depth. The London Stereoscopic Company quickly developed technologies for mass - producing stereo-graphs; and between 1854 and 1856 the company sold over half a million stereo-graphs. These mid-1960s Peacock and Gold brand lighter fuel hand warmers were used in Falls Creek to keep out the cold. The concept behind the hand warmer is that through combustion (ignition) of lighter fluid (light petrol distillate) it becomes a catalytic heater, relying on a catalysed chemical reaction to break down molecules and create heat. The devices could get quite hot, not hot enough to set paper on fire, but hot enough to give a nasty burn if sustained contact against your skin occurred. The construction of the device is very simple. There is very fine rolled wire mesh which fits on top of the reservoir body. After you fill the reservoir with lighter fluid, vapor pressure builds up. The device ignites by heating the grill with a match or lighter until it glows red. There is no open flame. The hand warmer also had a velvet bag to place it in after igniting to prevent direct skin contact. They were able to generate heat for up to a whole day. The Japanese company Yamato Shokai Ltd was founded in 1923 in the city of Osaka. Destroyed during air raids in 1945, the factory was rebuilt in 1946. They manufactured the Peacock brand pocket-warmer and sold it internationally.These items are significant because they were commonly used at Falls Creek.The pocket warmer is a small, relatively flat device with a tank at the bottom and a burner mechanism a t the top. "PEACOCK/MADE IN JAPAN" is engraved near the burner. The warmer fits into a metal case which features a series of ventilation holes in the shape of a peacock's tail. This painting was inspired by an original painting by Wilhelm Melby held at the National Gallery of Victoria. Melby is a Danish artist (1824-1882). It depicts a famous Devonshire coastal region famous now for its lighthouse and the pick up point for the pilot when entering waters approaching Dartmouth. The sailing vessels pre-date the construction of the famous lighthouse. Over the centuries the view would have been familiar to many sailors as they left or approached the English mainland and south coast ports in the English Channel. Madeline Mary Ravenna Lewellin (1854 – 24 November 1944) was born in Victoria to Dr John Henry Hill Lewellin, a physician, and Grace Elizabeth (née Danneby). She was one of five daughters, and the family lived in Prahran. Lewellin's brother, Captain Herbert Gordon Hill Lewellin, was a commander in the P. and O. fleet (apprentice on the Romanoff, Lieutenant RNR on the HMS Arethusa in 1899, RMS Mongolia in 1913 sunk in 1917, Naldera in 1920). She studied painting at the National Gallery School in 1879 under Eugene von Guerard. She's also known for collecting and painting specimens, and became a member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria in 1885. In 1884 she won a silver medal for her studies of fungi. She collected plants for Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the variety of Dicrastylis lewellinii (Purple sand-sage) is named after her. The first local government authority for Marong was the Marong Road District (an early form of single-purpose local government), which was proclaimed on 19 August 1860. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a Shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. On 2 December 1994, with the creation of Greater Bendigo City Council, it was abolished through the amalgamation which took place between Bendigo City, Eaglehawk Borough, Huntly Shire, part of McIvor Shire, part of Metcalfe Shire and Strathfieldsaye Shire to form the City of Greater Bendigo. "Hunter" pocket watch that was presented to James "Jinger" Trewartha in1899 by the Long Gully Cricket Club. (See 10866.2) District Cricketers subscribed the money for the gold watch and chain that was presented to Trewartha at the 1899 Annual banquet of the Long Gully Cricket Club. A "hunter" pocket watch is a pocket watch with a hinged metal lid that covers the dial and crystal to protect them from damage. The name comes from the convenience of being able to open the watch with one hand while holding the reins of a horse. Pocket watches have been around since the fifteenth century.
