“Pennies” were awarded to the Next of Kin of soldiers who died in or as a result of the “Great War” and approximately 1.5million were issued up until the 1930’s they were accompanied by a scroll (letter) from King George with the message “‘I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War”. The Name of the serviceman, which appears on the medallion' is always shown without rank. This is to show that the sacrifice of all men is of equal value.Stanley Alan Morey was born in Dulwich, London, England from whence he came to Austalia and lived with his parents and elder sister in Brighton Victoria He became a fitter and turner. He enlisted in the A.I.F on the 21th April 1917 Service number 3444 and was assigned to the 59th Battalion and embarked from Sydney on the HMAT “Port Melbourne” on the 16th July 1917 He went to France from England on the 9th January 1918 and joined his unit 18th January 1918 at Le Havre Less than 3 months later he was Killed in Action. The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918.Edward S Holgate entered Ballarat College in 1894. On leaving school he became on auctioneer with the family firm S Holgate & Son, Ballarat. Before enlistment he was secretary of the Ballarat College Old Collegians Society. 'Ted' was killed at Villers-Bretonneux on 27 April 1918 two dats after his commendation in military dispatches for 'gallantry in the field on 24-25 April 1918'. Edward's brother Harry Spencer Holgate also enlisted and was killed at Zonnebeke on 11 October 1917. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. The ANZAC Day medallion was issued for sale in 1916. The medallion was struck by the Education Department of Victoria for school children in 1916, to commemorate the first anniversary of the ANZAC Forces landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. An article in the ARGUS newspaper, written at the time, stated that the medallions were issued for sale for the price of sixpence. Although 175,000 medallions were made, this proved insufficient for demand. The medallion was sold to Victorian school children at commemorations of the landing of the of the Australian and New Zealand troops arriving on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915. The medallion was also distributed to the public on ANZAC Button Day for one shilling. Circular medal with an eyelet at the top for attaching loop holding ribbon (loop and ribbon missing). From its beginnings in the late 1840's, Warrnambool progressed through the years from being a town and borough to finally being proclaimed a city in May 1918. The Governor of the day Mr Arthur Stanley officiated at the event on May 23rd, 1918. It was only the fourth such municipality to achieve this status at the time These medallions were a memento of this occasion.These small medals are significant as they are linked to an important event in the growth of Warrnambool. Three similar medallions in the form of a brooch with clasp, all in gilt metal and enamel. Round medallions 25mm in circumference, with blue enamel circular rim of 4mm around most of the outside, except for white enamel decal of 10mm at bottom. Pin clasp on reverse of the medallions. Two medallions donated from a separate source are identical with the others in markings; one with pin clip, one without pin clip. All medals identical, though manufacturers imprint " Bridgland & King " only appears on reverse of two. "City of Warrnambool" appears in gold block letters around blue enamel circumference of medal, "1918" appears in gold lettering in white enamel decal at the bottom. Warrnambool city crest is pressed in gold relief in the centre of the medal, consisting of a ship at sea, a sheaf of wheat, these quartered below the Victorian Coat of Arms. Joyce Hayward and her husband, Cyril came from England to Warrnambool in 1955. For 30 years she and her husband were dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors Company and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Theatre Group. Along with her husband she helped to develop and build the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre. She was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the arts in Warrnambool in 1981. Warrnambool City Council gives Citizenship Awards annually. This is a significant item as it was an important award received by Joyce Hayward, a prominent person in the Warrnambool arts scene for 30 years. This is a bronze-coloured medallion presented to Joyce Hayward as a citizenship award in 1970. It is circular in shape with the crest of the City of Warrnambool on one side and a laurel wreath with inscriptions on the other. It has a metal ring at the top for hanging the item. It is in a black leather box lined with red velvet and white silk and includes a small metal stand to display the medallion. The WWI Death Plaque (Death Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who fell in the Great War 1914 -1918.The memorial plaque would be accompanied by a Memorial Scroll, a letter from Buckingham Palace and often a letter from the deceased's commanding officer. They would not usually arrive as a single package, but as a series of separate mailings. In this case we have the letter from Buckingham Palace. Wilfred (Wiff) Graham Salmon attended Ballarat College 1902 - 1910. He enlisted in 1915 and embarked as a driver with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. He transferred to the Royal Flusing Corps in 1916. He was killed fighting raiders over the Thames Valley near London on 7 July 1917. 'Wiff' was reputedly the first person to die defending London from a foreign invader since the time of the Norman Conquest. His brother Robert Arthur Salmon was also an old collegian. Other possible family members who are old collegians include Nellie Florence Salmon (ent CPLC 1907; DB 1.8.1899), John Walter Salmon (ent BC 1898; DB 22.11.1889), Geoffrey Salmon (ent BC 1910; DB 3/11/1896). Wilfred's brother Robert (Bob) Salmon is mentioned in the school's 1964 history by Gordon Meins p.68..."Captain (then Lieut) Bob Salmon M.C. on one occasion worked for 7 nights straight in No Man's Land and is credited with rescuing nearly 300 of our wounded."
