Metal sign with embossed lettering, the corners have been folded over with mounting holes put through the thicker sections. The embossing reads: 'This Land is Auriferous and Subject to Mining Conditions.' The sign is very rusted and there is no trace of the original paintwork. A handwritten note with the sign reads: 'This sign was found covered by grass and eucalyptus leaves etc., at the side of the road leading past the Eucy. Factory in the vicinity of the Whipstick forest. Found in 1977 by Jean and Ross Miller, Wireless Street, Kangaroo Flat. At the time of scanning the lead article. It is over sixty years old, and ran from Castlemaine to Swan Hill in the old coaching days, and afterwards ran from Bendigo to Inglewood. It was owned by Mr Shadbolt, and was purchased from him by Mr Bannerman of Huntly near Bendigo, who had the undercarriage taken off and the body placed on a motor chassis. It now runs between Bendigo and Huntly as a daily motor transport. It has never been painted since it was made.' See Research. The donor worked for the trustee for the Pethard Estate and to prevent the material being disposed of, she retained it. George Pethard, in his role as Mayor of Bendigo, was active in community organisations and was a member of a contingent which travelled overseas to promote Victoria. "It is believed that the SUNDIAL was constructed by Peter Rawlins for Sister Campbell, and it was originally sited on the North side of the Homestead Tree, near the Cannon. The base was 'faced' with rocks from the shoreline, and the Sundial itself is of a slate material. By the early 90's, the overhead canopy of the surrounding trees, began to overcome the Sundial, and it could not be 'read'. It was decided to move it to a more clear sunny site. Document. Cannons at Eaglehawk. Typed document by the Bendigo Branch of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria on the cannons at Eaglehawk. It reads - The two cannons were originally ship cannons, smooth bore type and later modified by the insertion of a rifled tube. This suggests that they were used as fort land guns in gun emplacements, and it is possible that these were mounted around Port Phillip Bay during the Russian scare at the turn of the century. The large ring at the rear is for lashing down to control recoil, and the swivel mounts enable elevation. These were placed in position at Eaglehawk by ox team, and at a later stage a steam traction engine overturned attempting to move one.
