His home address was 10 Clarke St Prahran VIC. He was a fitter and turner and went on to work for EA Machin & Co 535 Elizabeth St Melbourne as a mechanical fitter after the war.Small brown rectangular booklet containing personal documentation of NV Thompson VX111547, including passport size photo x 2, enlistment details, training records, medical history, Q record, record of leave. The cover has only handwritten inscriptions in blue ink and pencil. Stored within a brown coated canvas storage pouch with single flap.Multiple inscriptions both typed and handwritten. The Myer store, at the south west corner of Armstrong and Sturt Streets, with the 'new' cantilevered verandah (and evidently still some building renovations happening). This building has had many tenants and occupiers, but has always been a department store, originally constructed 1869-71 for R.J. Mitchell. The architect was noted Ballarat architect H.R.Caselli. A replica of the 1901 verandah was built in the late 1980s. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. Morshead's was a popular department store in the 1950s and 1960s. In this night exposure the famous window displays can be clearly seen. Also at the extreme right of the photograph the verandah over 'the bridge' can be seen - the creek is covered over making an arcade. Also the verandah posts which were all removed in the 1960s and cantilevered verandahs installed throughout Ballarat. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. This interesting photograph shows how a presently unprepossesing corner of Ballarat once looked. Also included is the Buck's Head hotel at the extreme right, which closed in 1960 and was demolished. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mrs Charlotte Drew was a long term resident of Canadian, an area of Ballarat East. She first arrived in Australia in Adelaide. She and her husband George, who was a carpenter, arrived in Ballarat in 1851, and in these reminiscences she recalls a very lively life.

The Chinese School was attached/run by the Town Mission. "THE CHINESE SUNDAY SCHOOL . The opening services of the newly erected Chinese Sunday school building in connection with the Town Mission, were brought to a close on Monday night by a tea and public meeting, held in the Mission Hall. The now building, which presents a very nice appearance, and is an improvement to that part of the Main road, was erected at a cost of £95 ; Mr H. R. Caselli acting as honorary architect, kindly prepared plans, etc. A new front fence was erected at a cost of £l6, which, with all other expenses, amounted to £126 3s 6d. Previously to the present effort collections and subscriptions were obtained as follow; —Mr Burnett's service, £l8 11s 5d; Chinese Sunday school anniversary, £9 16s 10d; concert on Easter Monday, £8 15s; Phoenix Foundry, per Mr Pethard, £7; sub scriptions, £23 8s 6d, leaving a debtor balance of £57 7s 9d. The. collections on Sunday were good. Mr Lee Young, of the Chinese store, Main road, kindly gave the tea, whioh was a valuable donation. The proceeds of the tea meeting will be about £l0. The building was prettily decorated by Mr Chessell, Mrs King Hook, and the gir!s.connected with the sohool. Mr Moorshead, the caterer, gave all the school children tea gratis- Mrs Lee Young, Miss Emma Lee Young. Miss G. Kay, Miss J. Hong Gong, Mrs King Hook, Mrs Stoneman, and Mrs Pethard waited at tables. Mr M. D. Morgan presided at the public meeting in the Mission Hall, and was supported platform by the Mayor of Ballarat East, the Revs. J. White, J. J. Perrin, and E. Turner, who delivered excellent and suitable speeches; but previously, however, offers of donations - to clear off the debt were made by Mr D. Ham, £10; the chairman, £5; Mr and Mrs Whitrick, £2 17s; a number of donors of £1 each, and less sums, which, with the collec tions, amounted to £58 16s 7d. This sum, with the sale of the cottage.on the ground, clears the debt, and leaves the com mittee a few pounds in hand towards lining and seating the building. A pleas ing feature in the meeting was the hearty giving of several Chinese Christians, including Mr Le Young; also singing by the Chinese chil dren, led by Mr Pethard. When the result was made known tbe whole, meeting stood and sang —“ Praise God from whom all blessings flow," for the success in having the place opened free of debt. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Caselli, and all who took part in the effort: and one of the happiest meetings ever hold by the mission was brought to a close by again singing the doxology and the benediction." The Keoghs took up Lot 7 in the Village Settlement in 1905. John Keogh was a big Irishman and cleared many of the giant trees on his Lot 7. They had little water for their crops so grew gooseberries and red currants rather than the more valuable strawberries. Mrs Keogh (nee Cleary) inherited money in 1906 and they built a new weatherboard house. The original bush hut remained as the kitchen. Son James (Jimmie) married Mary Walsh, a teacher at the local school. Jimmie built the small shop on the triangle of land cut off when the CRB road went through. Jimmie and his wife left the district when he joined Victoria Police. Jimmie came back to the area and finally sold the land of Lot 7 to Rimington's Nurseries. He moved his family to Kilsyth. In 1939 the shop was moved across the road to be used as an office by the road builders. A valuable insight into the genesis of Melbourne Legacy, as well as the life and work of the founder of Melbourne Legacy, Lieut Gen Sir Stanley George Savige KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED (1890 - 1954). The notation H5 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy (late 1960s/early 1970s by Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong- see item at 00456). Printed colour postcard of a horse tram travelling on the north side of Sturt St towards Lydiard St. Tram is travelling on the "right side of the road", which is unusual, horse trams normally travelled in bound on the south side or the "wrong side". Close examination shows three (3) horses on the tram, the middle appearing to be fairly small. In the back ground are the buildings on the south side of Sturt St include Harry Davies & Co. store, Stansfield & Smith Paper Warehouse. On rear is places for correspondences stamp, address. Handwritten on rear is "This will give you a fair idea of the beautiful Sturt St Ballarat. It is the prettiest I have seen. Yours " Dated 19/10/1905.
