The handle for the letter opener is made from a discharged British or Australian MK VII .303 calibre rimmed cartridge. The blade of the letter opener is attached to the handle via a bullet which has been sliced through the middle HMAS Uralba was an auxiliary minefield tender and armament stores carrier operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during World War II. Made by Albert Henry Rogers who served in the British Army during WW1, the grandfather of the donor. It was made as a symbol of hope as receiving letters from home gave them hope. Hence the bullet made into a letter opener is a symbol of something made to kill into something to give hope. The projectile has been split in half lengthways and the blade soldered in. The markings on the cartridge indicate that it is a Mk VII cartridge manufactured by the Royal Laboratory in 1917.Both sides of the blade have decorative engraving on them. Heister's mouth opener was incorporated in anaesthetic practice but was not designed for this purpose. Lorenz Heister (1983 - 1758) used his device for mouth inspection and for operations on the palate, tonsils and teeth in the pre-anaesthesia era. He was not impressed with the way it was used by others in his life time and believed that it overstretched the jaw when used inappropriately. Despite its apparent brutality, the Heister mouth gag was still advertised for sale in 1983 and its useful mechanism has been incorporated into modern surgical retractors. A souvenir paper knife made from a piece of wood salvaged from HMS WARSPITE. This is fashioned form a piece of wood and is in the shape of a paper envelope opener, it has a small brass label attached to one surface. The Parker Bros Auto Company was established in 1927 in Liebig Street, with the business selling Chevrolet cars and used cars and later becoming the original Holden dealer in Warrnambool. The company employed a large staff with show rooms, a workshop, a panel shop, and a spare parts section. In 1968 the business relocated to 109 Lava Street and was still operating in the 1980s.This key ring holder is of great interest as a souvenir of Parker Bros. Auto Co, a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 50 years.This is a brown leather key holder issued as an advertising feature by Parker Bros Auto Co. Warrnambool. The key holder is folded over to include a metal bottle opener which is held to the leather with a metal stud and a metal press stud enables the holder to be locked shut. In the early 1900's, E.B. Jones developed a small glass churn for home use. Nathan Dazey purchased Jones' business and relocated it to St. Louis, Missouri as the Dazey Churn and Manufacturing Co. Dazey churns were manufactured up until 1945. Although best known for its butter churns, the company also made can openers, knife sharpeners and other kitchen products. Thes churns were widely used throughout households in rural Australia during the first half of the 20th century.This item was typical of kitchenware used widely in the early twentieth century when households produced more basic food items. This ashtray was given as a keepsake to customers of Gehrig Dairy in Wodonga. The dairy was located on the corner of Hovell Street and Wodonga Street in the late 1960s. It was owned and operated by Graham Charles Gehrig. It was customary for the dairy to give a Christmas gift each year. Other items included a thermometer and can or bottle openers. Mr. Gehrig passed away in 2019 and is buried in Wodonga. He served over 30 years as a member of the Wodonga Cemetery Trust, many of those as Chairman.
