Handwritten copy of items for the Newsletter. Included is Machinery Contractor Called to Task. He took a lot longer to do the work than he should have. Boys Will Be Boys tells of a boy who was supposed to driving the whim horse, but in the absence of the braceman, he amused himself by taking a truck out of the cage and putting it back again. Then he started stepping backwards and forwards by holding onto a rope across the shaft, then fell down the shaft. He got a severe shaking. Cheers and Groans are about the long hours the miners worked and the introduction of the 8 hour day. Primitive Shafts is about the Victoria Reef Shafts. Diary kept during Prof. Rainer Radok's internment in Australia, following his arrival by ship on the HMT Dunera.At the end of August 1940 the Hired Military Transport Dunera, a boat carrying around 2,500 European male internees, the majority of which were Jewish, arrived on Australian shores after two arduous months at sea. Although many had made England their home, their German or Austrian background caused these men to be classified as ‘enemy aliens’ by the British Government and sent to Australia without their families. The ‘Dunera Boys’ were interned in camps at Tatura and Hay. Although some internees were released after two years because they possessed specific industry skills which would aid the nation, others were interned for the entire duration of the war. This collection brings together objects, personal effects and documents relating to the journey, internment and subsequent military service in the 8th regiment experienced by the ‘Dunera Boys’. Also included are artworks and poems created by the internees during their interment, which express the thoughts and feelings of the men and document the daily life in the camps.This is an A5 size notebook of 90 pages, all handwritten in German. Pages are numbered on the upper corners and each entry is dated. Back cover is titled: "Arithmetical Tables" and "Multiplication Table". The blue cover is attached with yellow adhesive tape and is very loose from the inner pages. There are a few drawings throughout.Handwritten in ink on the front cover is the inscription "Radok 1940-1941." Written below in pencil is the address "16 Grove St. Passaie N.J." -

Memorial plaque and Letter of condolence from Buckingham Palace signed by King George V sent to the family George William PAGE - born 20/5/1900. He served with the RAN aboard HMAS Tingira a training ship for boys during the First World War. He died by accidental drowning in Sydney on 16/3/1919. Service No 6790George William PAGE served with the RAN aboard HMAS Tingira a training ship for boys during the First World War. On 16/3/1919 he died by accidental drowning. In 1911 Sobraon was purchased by the Commonwealth Government for £15,000 and fitted out as a boy’s training ship at Mort’s Dock Balmain. The name chosen for her was an aboriginal word meaning ‘open sea’ and she was commissioned into the RAN as HMAS Tingira on 25 April 1912. On 1 June 1912 the first batch of 37 boys recruited from New South Wales joined Tingira. Drafts from other states quickly followed, completing the first intake of 100. Eric Eckstein - his story as told to a Tatura Historical Society meeting. A noted speaker Eric and Mrs Eckstein were invited and accepted to be our guest speaker. Co incidentally a member of our Society remembered the name and wandered if it was the same bloke. It was. Eric having taken the opportunity of the learned men among the Dunera people, furthered his education and qualified as a secondary teacher. Numurkah was one high school to which he was posted. an interesting account of one of the 734 who joined the ill fated Arandora Star of which 486 perished and one of the 200+ survivors who subsequently came to Australian on the Dunera. The German survivors from the Arandora Star, 244 joined the B & G class 2288 Jewish Refugees, some 2732 souls.
