One-room police station was built in 1869 in Maffra and moved c.1882 to a new site in Maffra, by the new police residence office. The first Eltham Police Station was in the small building opposite Dalton Street rented from Mr Jarrold in 1857. In 1859 a dedicated Police Residence was built at 728 Main Road. A small weatherboard Police Station was attached to the side of the residence and a blue stone cell at the rear. Also on site were stables for the police horses. The Eltham Courthouse was built in 1860 and is the oldest public building in the district. In 1959 the Victoria Police purchased a house in Pryor Street to be refurbished as the Eltham Police Station. In 1961 the Police in Eltham move into Pryor Street refurbished buildings and office. During 2001 to 2002, the Eltham Police Station was demolished and a new complex constructed on site. This lock was once used in the old 19th century gaol in Gilles Street, Warrnambool. The gaol is part of a group of four heritage buildings which comprise a police station, a police residence, police stables as well as the gaol. These were built between 1883 and 1888 from the designs of the Victorian Public Works Department architect, E.R. Laver. He was responsible for the designs of many 19th century country police stations, post offices and courthouses in Victoria. The four heritage buildings, of which the gaol is one, are important because they are some of the few surviving Warrnambool 19th century bluestone buildings. Today they form part of the South West Tafe Complex. This lock is of considerable interest as one used in the Warrnambool 19th century gaol building. The door on which it was used appears to be walled up now. This is a large iron lock with a base plate with three rivets and a projection piece. There are three curved iron pieces on the plate and these are fixed to the plate with 12 rivets. The bolt is rounded and moves under the three curved pieces across the plate. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings.View of the rear of the former Kew Police Station in High Street, Kew. This building is a fine example of a very early small brick country court house which retains its furnishings and has important associations with the early history of the Eltham township. It was used for Eltham Road Board meetings in the 1860s and later to provide additional school accommodation. It is the oldest public building remaining in Eltham and forms an important group in historic and streetscape terms with the adjoining former police residence. The survival of the furnishings (of unknown origins) is of particular significance given the building's age. This building, and the former police residence beside it, were constructed as a result of a petition by five Eltham residents in 1857. The nearest police were at Heidelberg eight miles away or at the Caledonia Diggings 21 miles away. After the construction of the Court of Petty Sessions at Eltham in 1859-60 (which was designed by the Public Works Department and built by a Mr Duncan for a cost of 536 pounds), it was used for a variety of purposes. Eltham Road Board meetings were held there until 1868 when the board was transferred to Kangaroo Ground and as the Road Board Secretary's office, until this was transferred to Wingrove Cottage in 1867. It was used as an overflow for the Dalton Street School in 1875. According to National Trust records, the Eltham Court House is a relatively rare building type. There are only six other known examples of similar small brick country court houses in the state which have small projecting entry porches and a gabled form. The Victorian gold rush came to Eltham in the early 1850s and with it came a crime wave. Local traders called for police protection. This led to the appointment in 1857 of Irish-born Peter Lawlor as Senior Constable at Eltham. In 1859 Peter and his wife Kate were able to move into an official police residence at the corner of Maria Street (now Main Road) and Brougham Street, with stables out the back and a large paddock for grazing across the road. Some of their children went to Eltham Primary School. That 1859 police residence is now the home of the Eltham District Historical Society. The small wooden building on the very corner is a modern replica of the separate police station/office built around 1885-1900. Cases investigated by Constable Lawlor included murders, stealing (horses, cattle, fowls, watches, linen, clothing), a search for a missing person, and two separate instances of abandoned children seeking help. He was officially commended in 1866 for bringing to justice a man who had indecently assaulted an 11-year old girl. Sadly, there was a similar but unconnected case only a few months later. But events had a lighter side; in 1871 Kate lent her piano to the Snowflakes Christy Minstrels for a Catholic Church fund-raising concert. Peter was transferred to Prahran in 1872. He died in 1876 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with four of his children. His headstone was stolen some time after May 1990 but was returned anonymously (broken into three pieces) in August 2013. It is resting on his grave but has not been re-erected. Surrey Hills Mounted Police Station was located at 5 Suffolk Road (dem.) from 1889-1914. It was a police residence with two rooms as the police office and workshop. There were stables on the back fence. The property adjoined Wyclif Church in Norfolk Road. Gilbert McCallum rented from c.1914-1923 when he built a home in Westminster Street. It is his son Archie who can just be seen on the front steps. Archie remembers the 2 storied stables with a gantry for hauling feed sacks up with a block and tackle, then a polished wood slide to send the feed down. The McCallum children and local friends found this to be a marvellous slide. David McPhie, ex-police force, lived here with his family from 1923-c.1950. Altona is a suburb of Melbourne, 13 km south-west of Melbourne's CBD and located within the City of Hobsons Bay Altona Police Station opened as a temporary police station in 1919 in the Melbourne District. It was on the corner Sargood and Blyth Streets. It was staffed by one 1st Constable. The original police station was in a small room attached to the front of a 5-roomed weather-board dwelling with an iron roof on land measuring 66' x 165'. There was also a kitchen, vestibule, wash-house, office, one W.C. and a lock-up. In 1929 it became part of the Bourke District. On 31 March 1958 it moved into newly built government premises at 51-53 Blyth Street, on the corner of Bent Street. The building consisted of a cream brick veneer police residence and police station with cell. Staff was increased to a Sergeant in Charge and 3 Constables. A new police station was opened in Altona North on 7th October 1979. The Altona Police Station remained as a sub-station for a few a short time until the building was sold. July 2019 - a new police station is being constructed at 1 Galvin Street, Altona. Galvin Street was names after S/C Michael Arthur Galvin, 3651, who was appointed on 5 Jan 1886 and resigned on 4 Dec 1913. Murray Comrie Collection. The buildings in this image are (from left to right) the lockup, stable and office of the Tarnagulla Police complex. At far left a small part of the rear of the policeman's residence is visible. This residence is clearly depicted in THA-2019.0030. Behind the residence and outbuildings (in background of this photo) was an adjoining paddock for the police horses. This town block was the base for policing in Tarnagulla from 1878 until the 1990s. At the time of this photo (1924), Angus Comrie Snr was the constable for Tarnagulla, living at the police residence with his family. The residence was sold for removal in in the 1960s and replaced with a prefabricated residence and small office from Bealiba which were used until the 1990s. These as well as the lockup are still in place (as of 2019) on the corner of Victoria and Gladstone Streets. There are now private residences built on the former police horse paddock. For over 100 years the Comrie name has been involved with the Victoria Police. Angus Comrie Snr, joined the force in 1899 and served as constable in Kaniva and Avoca and then in Tarnagulla from late 1909 until 1927. His son Murray Comrie, born in Tarnagulla in 1912 also became a policeman and later a Chief Superintendent, retiring in 1972 and passing away in 1983 after a long illness. Murray Comrie's son Murray Jnr., to avoid confusion became known by his middle name, Neil. Neil Comrie also joined Victoria Police and and rose through the ranks to become Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1993 to 2001.
