Yields information about a converted Geelong Pengelly tram No. 16, Yields information about a converted Geelong Pengelly tram No. 16Black and white digital print from scan of a donated negative showing a converted single truck Pengelly car No. 16, possibly at a terminus - see below. Has the destination of Newtown. Photographer and date unknown. Black and White print made from scan of negative. Original Negative stored with Negatives. Dave O'Neil confirmed June 30/2009, after some searching at West terminus, photo was taken outside of the hotel. House with the chimney is still there. Though prior to 1951, West trams terminated at the Railway Station or Beach, and late 1930's at the Wharf. Some trams would do trips from those points to West and then would do a Newtown or Chilwell. This could explain destination showing Newtown, wasn't changed from Newown trip. Also in war years, some trams travelled from West to Newtown and Chilwell on Friday nights, late shopping. Forty two page book with red covers, titled "The Picturesque Folio of Ballarat - 'The Modern Athens". Sheets have been individually printed both sides, stapled and then glued to the covers. Cover - gives title and printer details First sheet - with a greetings sheet for Good wishes and seasons greetings. Has a printed date of 1905. See Inscriptions. Dated 22/11/1904. On Tuesday, 4 October 1904, the first serious railway accident occurred on the Colac-Beech Forest line near Beech Forest. As no train was scheduled that day in the afternoon the crew decided to fetch some wood from down the line. They fired the boiler on locomotive 3A, attached two trucks to the locomotive and moved out of the station. When they arrived opposite the Ditchley Park Hotel they stopped the engine and adjourned to the bar for some refreshments before beginning work. While they were engaged some local children boarded the unattended engine, started it, panicked when it began moving and jumped out leaving in to speed away and tip on a curve in a cutting at Ditchley. The engine was severely damaged. However, its cause remained an Otways secret. Photo of the installation of an electric arc type street lamp in Lydiard St North, near the Provincial Hotel Ballarat. The tower wagon is drawn by a single horse. Two boys standing alongside while two men are on the top of the wagon, a man on the top of the ladder is positioning a lifting beam while two men on the ground hold the rope for this beam. On the side of the wagon is possibly an extension that could be lifted onto the top of the tower itself to give a greater working height. The buildings between Mair St and the railway station on the west side of Lydiard St North remain in position. 1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. Prue Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.In 1928, five residential allotments bordering Segtoune and Windsor Streets were advertised for sale as part of a subdivision. Four of the blocks faced Segtoune Avenue. The auctioneers proclaimed the advantages of the sites: ‘Situate one minute from the High Street Electric Tram, which now runs direct to Spencer Street via Bridge Road and Flinders Street. Opposite the East Kew Railway Station (Outer Circle Line), which may be reopened In connection with the new Line from Kew to Doncaster; Adjacent lo the Kew Recreation Reserve, Sports Oval, and Swimming Bath; Half Minute from the Shopping Centre of East Kew, Accessible to the State School and Other Educational Centres’. The Harp of Erin Hotel and the route of the Outer Circle Railway line are marked on the plan. The Recreation Reserve and Sport Oval refer to Victoria Park. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The Belford Heights Estate was a subdivision in Kew East, even though the title of the plan indicates that it was located in Kew. The subdivision had been approved by 1915, and included 105 lots facing Strathalbyn, Kitchener, Hamilton and Beresford Streets, as well as Balfour and Belford Roads. Those lots hand coloured with red probably represent blocks that had been sold. The additional information provided on the plan is also of interest. The plan includes the original location of East Kew State (Primary) School in Strathalbyn Street, which opened in 1892. The inset Locality Plan also includes the route of the Outer Circle Railway and the location of the Wilsmere and East Kew Stations. 1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The hotel in the photograph is the original single storey Royal Hotel with its corner entrance. It stood on the south -east corner of Evans and Brook Streets in Sunbury. The original building was damaged by fire in 1936 and a two storey red brick building replaced it on the original site with the hotel entrance facing onto Brook Street. The hotel is in close proximity to the railway station so it was able to offer accommodation to travellers visiting the Asylum.The Royal Hotel is one of two surviving hotels built in Evans Street. Originally there were four hotels built between Station and Brook Streets along Evans Street.A non-digital black and white photograph of a white single story hotel building showing the original corner entrance and three men standing beside it in the street.
