A programme for a showing of film footage of Queen Elizabeth's coronation a couple of weeks after the coronation. In the 1950s few households had televisions so although the Coronation was broadcast, many people may not have had the opportunity to watch it live. A screening at South Melbourne Town Hall on 23rd June 1953 was for Junior Legatees. Approximately 1,200 children attended with their mothers (from 'History of Legacy 1953' at 01491). The Governor Sir Dallas Brookes was unable to attend due to illness and his wife, Lady Brookes spoke and read a message from him.Junior Legatees pledged allegiance to the Queen at rallies and classes, so they would have been excited to see the Coronation screened.White paper programme with a colour photo of the Queen and black type, folded in half.coronation, gala performance

On the 20th November 1952 SEC linesmen Stewart Aicken, Donald Odames and Desmond Veraker were working on the corner of Gisborne Road and Masons Lane in Bacchus Marsh. Veraker was in the air in a harness working on power lines when he was electrocuted. Aicken and Odames were on the ground and attempted to rescue him and revive him. Sadly Vereker died from his injuries. Aicken and Odames were later given bravery awards by the Royal Humane Society of Australasia for their actions.Royal Humane Society of Australasia certificate presented to Stewart Aicken to recognise the bravery of his actions on the 20th November 1952 in attempting to rescue fellow linesman Desmond Vereker from electrocution. It was awarded to him to accompany a bronze medal also awarded to Aicken for this act of bravery. The certificate and bronze medal are housed in a frame. Underneath the bronze medal is a black and white photograph of Aicken receiving the award from the Governor of Victoria Sir Dallas Brooks in 1953. Also in the photograph is an unidentified man and woman. This ceramic tankard mug was produced for Melbourne Legacy to honour their Patron. The Patron of Legacy is usually the Governor of Victoria, since the very early days of Legacy. It appears to be taken from a photo of General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, DSO, KStJ., who was Governor of Victoria from 1949. The date made is unknown but it believed to be early 1950s. Similar mugs were produced to honour Legatees Stan Savige and Syd Birrell and were estimated to have been produced in late 1940's or early 1950s. A similar one was made for the Queen's coronation in 1953. The President of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee McKeddie, conducted the wreath laying in the Inner Shrine. 2,500 children from 254 Melbourne Schools attended the ceremony, which was simultaneously broadcast by the ABC throughout Victoria, and over 200,000 children participated. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289 Swanston St was purchased. Melbourne Legacy is still using three floors of the building, with tenants on the ground floor. It was used in a newspaper article about the acquisition of the building for Legacy. It mentions the purchase price was undisclosed. It says the purchase was possible due to a generous gift of money from overseas in 1944. The building would be called the David H Dureau Memorial Building at the request of the donor. The article has a photo of Governor Sir Dallas Brooks and the Legacy President Bob Gaylard. Newspaper articles about the Christmas Party held at Government House in 1960. One is from The Age on 12 December 1960 and two from The Herald on the same day. Melbourne Legacy would hold Christmas parties for junior Legatees at Government House for many years due to the Governor of Victoria being patron of Legacy. Two photos show the Governor Sir Dallas Brooks the reins of a miniature mail coach drawn by two small ponies. Sitting with the Governor is 10 year old Sandra Fitzpatrick of Moe. Children would come from all over Victoria. Two other photos show archery with the Kew City Bowman providing instruction of archery to the children. Judith Berry was instructing Ken Barberis 8 years old. Also a photo is of Mickey Hodder, 11, of Lower Templestowe and Ivy Murray, 5, of Box Hill. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. There was a piece on the death of Legacy founder Stan Savige and has a photo of funeral cortege. Pages showed news from the different Boys and Girls Classes and photos showcased the annual demonstration. Also photos of the Legacy library and the medical and dental care given to junior legatees. Three documents relating to the redevelopment of Legacy House that was completed in 2006. In a message from the President published in the Bulletin, Legatee Bill Rogers mentions the official opening of Legacy House by the Governor of Victoria Professor David DeKretser AC on 25th August 2006. Also that two new tenants had been secured, IGA and Starbucks. The refurbishment had been necessary to upgrade the lift, provide better wheelchair access and comply with regulations. The notice also mentions an increased use of Direct Mail and the launch of the Torch Society in April. Second document was a reprint from a Press Release in 1957 when Sir Dallas Brooks officially opened Legacy House after purchase and refurbishment. The refurbishment was the first time Legacy approached the general public for funds as 90,000 pounds had been required. It also tells of the history of how Legacy acquired the David H Dureau Memorial Building through funds donated by a donor in 1944, a different property was purchased then sold and funds used to buy 293 Swanston St in 1956. The third document was the address that Bill Rogers spoke at the official opening on 25th August 2006. It mentions Bert Dennis, a former Junior Legatee, was donating the proceeds from an auction of a Dennis Family Homes project the following day. Life Governor certificates were given to those who supported the RVIB either through certain levels of financial contribution or by activities undertaken to support the institute. On November 11th 1926 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future. Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars.
