He died 28 December, 1911 and the zoo was opened on 17 April, 1917 and closed 1957. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. A leaflet from a parade held to present the Field Marshall Sir Thomas Blamey memorial fund awards and the Citizen Military Forces Officer Training course prizes for 1967. The parade was held on 26 May 1968. It included a Blamey Memorial Fund Oration by Brigadier J D Rogers which is a summary of his life and service. Sir Thomas Blamey was patron of Legacy for some years. To perpetuate his memory and achievements The Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey Memorial Fund was established by a number of eminent persons in late 1954. The fund was to make periodic awards to members of the Australian Defence Force selected for outstanding qualities of leadership. The article was part of collection of items about bequests made to Legacy put together by a former archive committee. The number B10 stood for 'Bequests' and document number. A record of the presentation of the Thomas Blamey Memorial Fund awards in 1968. Four photographs of Sir Hubert Opperman and a Malvern Star Moulton bicycle. Bruce Small took over Malvern Star bicycles in 1920 and hired a young Hubert Opperman, meeting him after 'Oppy' won a race and the prize of a Malvern Star bike. The pair became life long friends and after Bruce joined the Association for the Blind as a board member and President, he encouraged his friend to join as well. These photographs were most likely taken for Sir Hubert joining the board. Sir Henry de Castres Kellett (1851-1924) the son of a hereditary baronet, was born at Mt Gambier, South Australia in 1851. His English title had been created in Ireland in 1801, but the family was originally Norman with the later branches living in England and Ireland. Sir Henry Kellett assumed the title in 1906. Henry Kellett was a prominent Kew retailer, continuing his father’s newspaper and stationery business in Bulleen Road (now High Street). At various stages, he also acted as an insurance, postal and real estate agent. He lived in Walpole Street and later at Lota Begg (now demolished) in Westbrook Street, East Kew. In 1884, Henry Kellett was elected to the Kew Borough Council and served for 40 years; a remarkable example of public service. He was elected Mayor for a single term in 1888-9. Sir Henry de Castres Kellett died in St George’s Hospital in 1924 following a tragic car accident in Cotham Road, Kew while on Council business. The vehicle, in which he was travelling with fellow councillors and the Town Clerk, collided with a tram. The portrait was commissioned in 1884, near the end of Molesworth's term of office. The portrait was commissioned at the same time as those of Redmond Barry and Chief Justice Stawell. Robert Molesworth, like his contemporaries, Stawell and Barry, went to Trinity College, Dublin, and practiced at the Irish Bar before migrating to Australia in 1852. Molesworth quickly gained a large practice at the Bar. In 1853 he was acting Chief Justice and he later served as Solicitor-General in the early Victorian colonial administrations. Molesworth was appointed to the bench in 1856. He primarily worked in the Equity area, but his main contribution to Colonial administration was as the Chief Judge of the Court of Mines, establishing the basis of mining law in Australia.The portrait of Molesworth is significant because of whom it portrays and is the only known portrait of Molesworth.Full length portrait in oils of Sir Robert Molesworth. A portrait of Stanley Savige, the founder of Legacy, by Ernest Buckmaster. It was presented to Melbourne Legacy in the late 1940s by the 24th Battalion. Ernest William Buckmaster was an Australian artist born in Victoria. He won the Archibald Prize in 1932 with a portrait of Sir William Irvine. He also served as an Australian war artist during World War II.
