Dress owned by Catherine Ann Windsor (Kitty) (born 23 Nov 1919 died 17 Nov 2002) in the 1930s/1940s. She was grandmother of Rachael Cottle, Whitehorse Historical Society Secretary (2011-2016). Catherine was the gate-keeper at the Tunstall (Nunawading) railway gates at Springvale Road during 1934-1952. A house was supplied for the gatekeeper. Winlaton was established in Springvale Rd., Nunawading in 1956 as the main state-run institution for adolescent girls. Previously (1951-1953) Winlaton was a home run by the Mission of St James and St John for women with venereal diseases. Re-opened in 1956, female offenders were committed to Winlaton by the courts, but there were also many girls and young women in danger who had not committed a crime. The Nunawading orchard was purchased in 1920 by Mary Lilian Matheson from Florence Rebecca Course for a sum of 1050 Sterling Pound. In 1988 the Federal & State government allocated $125,000 to the Nunawading Council towards the purchase of the house, outbuildings and the orchard facing Springvale Road, as it was representative of one of the last working orchards in the Nunawading district. The property has now been vacant for many years (2011) and is secured with window bars and security services. Albert Geal, a builder found good quality clay at Tunstall. In 1903 Geal Brothers of Nunawading began making agricultural pipes for orchardists, then moved on to make bricks and tiles. The Geals pottery was on 11 acres at the corner of Springvale Road and Miton Street.
