Magill's laryngoscope with open straight blade and flat round speculum and a detachable light bulb connector, the bulb is missing. This laryngoscope is a previous version of the battery use ones conceived around 1920 therefore circa 1900. The design of the handle is similar to the Shipway laryngoscopes with a curved and pointed end and anatomical handle grip. The blade attachment place seems to be an adaptation to this kind of blade which differs from original models. The piece has several scratches and deep hit marks, as well as oxidation spots mostly around the internal canal of the blade. There is presence of resin residues on some surfaces. A visible different kind of metal was used at the blade base attachment place and for the light bulb connector. Engraved on handle its model type and in the arm of the handle a possible manufacturer name (illegible) and the place where it was made.Engraved at the handle, MAGILL'S LARYNGOSCOPE. Ivan Magill (1888-1986) designer, this piece was designed in 1926 along with other anaesthetic equipment.Chrome plated straight complete Magill laryngoscope in medium size format, with attached light bulb. Cylindrical handle for battery deposit and with a wavy hand grip for easy handling. Serrated and screwed lids on top and base of the handle grip for insertion of batteries and checking of electrical contact stud. The handle also has a metallic switch without any instruction of use. The arm of the handle has a detachable screw to adjust extendable blade position and firmness. The light bulb is attached to a metallic tube connector to the handle arm which is just pressed to the contact point base. The blade has a oxidation spot under the blade. The piece in full has several scratches marks mostly founded in handle, arm and top blade areas. This photograph shows the pre-heater on the left and the furnace on the right. After clean up of stamper table, amalgam is placed in a retort, then placed in the furnace where mercury is condensed and runs down the small pipe into an enamel bucket and can be reused. Ore bearing rock brought out of the mine was crushed at the battery by heavy metal stampers and the fine material passed over copper pates coated with mercury. Gold particles would combine with the mercury forming an amalgam which was then scrapped off the copper plates and put into the amalgam bucket ready for retorting too extract the gold. The amalgam of mercury and gold was placed into the retort which was heated to evaporate the mercury. The mercury cooled as it ran down the pipe which was recovered to be reused leaving the gold behind. The gold would later be put into a crucible and heated to burn of impurities and the molten pure gold poured into an ingot.A heavy cast iron bucket 20 centimetres high, 16 centimetres in diameter at its base and 22 centimetres diameter at the top. It has a spout five centimetres wide protruding two centimetres. This container would have been used to transport a chemical, but appears to have been repurposed as a bucket for use at the battery complex. The Panther lamp was made by Powell and Hanmer of Birmingham. (see Item 7354) This model appears to be dated from the 1920's. Early models of the automobile, motorbike and bicycles used carbide lamps as headlamps. Acetylene gas, derived from carbide, enabled early automobiles to drive safely at night. Thick concave mirrors combined with magnifying lenses projected the acetylene flame light. These type of lights were used until reliable batteries and dynamos became available, and manufacturers switched to electric lights.Carbide Vehicle Lamp.-Silvered Metal, Lens Assembly . "The State Battery was the central component in the gold mining of this area from the 1920s. The battery crushed the gold bearing quartz extracted from the mines and was a sizeable weatherboard building enclosing the engine and stampers. All that now remains are the bases for the machinery that comprised the battery, one timber and a couple of concrete bases and the nearby dam, which supplied water.
