Functional Object - Ticket Wallet with 4 blocks of tickets, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), 1960's
Ticket wallet with a set of four 1970's Ballarat tram tickets set up to represent part of a typical conductor's set of tickets by the BTM for display purposes.. 74.1 - Sheet of leather, approx. 2mm thick, stained brown with four pockets formed on each side with another sheet of leather, stitched on all sides to form pockets to hold eight blocks of tickets. Stitching is a light brown cotton with nickel plated steel staples at each end. Stamped "W 98" onto one side. 74.2 - 5c City section ticket block - A375800 - 375999 - See Reg. As built - Single truck, straight sill closed cross bench tramcar. As recovered - frame, roof, sides (some damage), and some internal parts. Placed on a fabricated truck - made from wheels ex Preston transfer dolly and steel crane beams ex Johns Valves. Timetable board for Camberwell Junction Batman Ave route 70, detailing times that services were scheduled to depart the Junction. Probably used until replaced by The Met style signs in the mid-1980s.Demonstrates a timetable board style used by the MMTB in the 1970s and early 1980s.Board made up to display tramway timetables for attachment to a post comprising heavy galvanised steel backing sheet with two small channels either end, spot welded to the steel back, front painted in green with the letters "M&M.T.B" in yellow paint, perspex sheet at the front, secured by 6 Allen screws with nuts on rear, containing a typed timetable sheet - for Camberwell Junction for Batman Ave timetable - undated. tramways, map, batman ave, camberwell junction, route 70, timetable -

Published by BHP 1967 gives the dimensions and properties of rails, steel sections and plates produced by Australian Iron and Steel and Broken Hill Pty Ltd. Was supplied free by BHP to students. Badge - ESCo driver, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, 1905
Yields information about the identification methods used by the ESCo to identify their crews to public and has a strong association with the individuals who wore them over time.Pressed metal uniform badge for ESCo Drivers. Round pressed steel badge with the words "ESCo OF V. LTD." pressed into the badge around the top portion of the badge, the word "DRIVER" and number "15" pressed into the lower half of the badge -with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Appears to have had a nickel silver finish originally. On rear badge two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a leather strap with a button hole cut into to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Has words "STOKES & SONS" stamped in reverse on the lower rear of the badge. Badges of this type shown on ESCo uniforms of 1905 and through to the 20's. Badge - Union badge, Wittenbach & Co, 1930's?
The badge belonged to the Donor's father - Bill Irvin, who was a SEC tram driver. Bill and his elder brother Dan, both drove trams in Ballarat. The Union badge confirmed membeship of the Union and was permitted to be worn on a uniform.Has a strong association with Bill Irvin, SEC tram driver of the 1930's and demonstrates the importance of being a union member at the time and the badge provided by the unionAustralian Tramway Employees Association (Tramways Union) badge. Badge made on a steel/ silver backing with words "Australian Tramway Employees Association" on outer edge of badge with a royal blue enamel background. In centre of badge has the Australian coat of arms with a railway type spoke wheel above the logo and underneath the coat of arms the words "Federated Australia" in a banner. Has a hole in the top of the badge for a steel ring or a method of attachment to a uniform. On back of badge has stamped into the badge "BL 42", possibly indicating Ballarat and badge number. Used on tramcars built by the Adelaide based company of Duncan and Fraser.Demonstrates a Duncan and Fraser Builders' plateOval-shaped enameled steel plate with the words "DUNCAN & FRASER LTD BUILDERS ADELAIDE" in black on a white background within two ovals and other markings. Sign - "Tram Stop Request"
Indicated or provided a location to tram drivers and passengers of a tram stop that trams had to be hailed or be requested to stop or to alight. Has the outline of a Z class tram. Introduced after Z class trams started to be used. A small sign providing details of the route number could be placed on the bottom edge. The 1977-78 MMTB Annual report has a photo of one of these then-new signs.Demonstrates the form of tram stop that the MMTB used in Melbourne that trams had to be signaled to stop at. Style introduced following following the use of Z class trams. Sign - Tram Stop - "Tram Stop Request" - formed from a formed steel sheet with a short angle leg, with holes along the top and bottom edges and on the angled side. Points of interest in the photograph are the lack of white lines along the tracks, safety zone equipment behind the tram, the "Hail Cars Here" tram stop sign on a steel pole by a traffic light and the style of traffic light. Two advertising panels on the front of the tram advertise "Jex Soap Pads" and the musical "Hair" at the Metro Theatre Bourke St. Two Fords are alongside the tramcar. The original source of photograph unknown. The Musical "Hair" was presented in Melbourne during 1971. Yields information about the location, the streetscape and the trams and vehicles in use at the time. Two of these plates were produced to be used on trams for drivers undergoing their first day of training from the Hawthorn Tram Depot. The 6th Image is of a cutting from The Sun 5 Dec 1969 shows the purpose of the L plate in position on tram 603. Badge - ESCo employee pass, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo)
Used by ESCo to enable identification of depot employees when travelling on the trams. Date made and when used unknown. Has hammer marks on rear of badge. See item 9038 for another example.Demonstrates a employee's free pass for travelling on Ballarat's trams.Handmade metal badge from brass sheet about 52 in diameter with a slot (long oval shape) about 23 long x 5 deep through which a leather strap about 100 long x 10 wide with a steel buckle is fitted. Stamped in capital letters on the badge are "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS" on the outside, "EMPLOYEES DEPOT PASS", in the centre of the badge, with the word "Employees" in a semi-circle. Functional object - Cincinnati "bundy" clock, Cincinnati Time Recorder Co. of Ohio, 1920s
This type of clock was used on the Port Melbourne bus route until its replacement by the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system (AVM) to record the departure time of bus services from a specific point along the route. Possibly used at the terminus itself. Clock obtained by the Museum from the MMTB at the time of its replacement c1980. Conductors rather than drivers "Punched" the clock when this bus route was operated by half-cab buses. Was originally in a steel case when received. The Museum made the perspex insert in the front door to enable operation by a key c1985 when it was installed in the Museum's Mess Room. See item 9566 for a key that was used.Demonstrates a MMTB Cincinnati manufactured time recording clock. The MMTB also made their own.Cincinnati "bundy" clock comprising a pendulum operated clock upper section and a lower recording and printing section with a paper roll within a red painted wooden case. Sign, "CARS STOP HERE", 1960's
Small red band at top, white band with letters CARS STOP HERE and large red band underneath, on both sides to indicate to drivers a compulsory stop. That is, all tram to stop at the location. The same sign was used for the same purpose in Melbourne. Has three holes for screws on the upstand or folded section. See item 9570 for a "HAIL CARS HERE" version. Demonstrates the signage used by the SEC (and the MMTB) to indicate tram stops and in particular compulsory tram stops.
