Book, 25 Jaar Afsluitdijk 1932-1957 (25 years of the Enclosure Dike), 1957. A stamp - 5 mei 1958 - indicates the library acquired it the following year
The book commemorates the opening of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Shutting off the North Sea created the IJsselmeer and connected the provinces of North Holland and Friesland. It has remained an essential traffic artery every since.The book records the cultural, economic and social impact of the Afsluitdijk on the Netherlands. A 56page rectanguar book commemorating the opening of the Afsluitdijk. The cover is of thick card while within the pages of text are illustrated with black and white photographs.Originally owned and eventually deregistered by "De Utrechtse Openbare Bibliotheek" (Utrecht Public Library). Another stamp. "Filiaal Elinkwijk" shows it was used by the library branch in Elinkwijk. Full title is "Vijfentwintig Jaar Afsluitdijk". Authors and illustrators are B. Den Oudsten en P.Terpstra with an introduction by the Queen's representative in Friesland, Mr.H.P.Linthorst Homan. Publisher is Algmeen Publiciteit Kantoor, Oosterkade 20b, Leeuwarden. -

Opened in 1857, St Kilda Railway Station is the oldest surviving railway station in Victoria. In the 1920s it was the second busiest station in Victoria after Flinders Street. Competition from motor traffic led to the decline of the station and of St Kilda itself. Services on the line were reduced in 1981 and it was converted to a tram route in November 1987. In 1989, several fires damaged the timber station building and by December, the roof had been destroyed. Metropol Apartments at 60 & 64 Fitzroy Street, completed by 2002, were constructed on the station forecourt site. Routes and traffic arrangements for the visit to Victoria on 26 May - 7 June 1920 by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII). The visit was to officially thank Australia for the support to Great Britain during World War I and to strengthen the links between Australia and the Empire. 3054 - Printed form titled "Daily Traffic Revenue Statement" of the SEC, Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways, on off white heavy duty paper. Gives value of tickets up to 15c, , scholar and parcel tickets, special trams, value of tickets issues, cash paid in by conductor, value of tickets collected, surplus or deficiency and hospital vouchers and Outfit number of either side of the form. Has space for branch, as at date, with signatures of Compiler. Form has number TRM 583-1 (OP109) , with two large holes on left hand side for holding or filing into accounts books. Form ruled in blue ink horizontally and red ink vertically with some horizontal lines. A similar form, printed only in black, without the holes also donated by Peter Watt. Has fare values up to 18c. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways following the end of the 2nd world war - when the tramway traffic was still high peak. Gives details of working hours, rosters for the week of motormen. Shows the additional trams to the basic service on Weekdays and hours of one man operation.Single large typed sheet of paper, titled SECV, Electricity Supply Department - Ballarat Branch, Ballarat Tramways, "Motorman's Runs with daily rostered hours". Arranged with four main columns, Monday to Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and within each main column 9 further columns giving Run No, Take Up, Relief times, Ord Rate (hours), One Man Rate, Spread (always "-" except for two on Saturday). Sign On and Sign Off - either 10 or 15 and the Total Hours. Columns vertically ruled in red ink. Not dated, but preparation format aligns with 3418 - 11/10/1946 - assume 10/1946. The Kew railway was opened in 1887, and diverged from the main (Box Hill–Lilydale) line about half-way between Hawthorn and Glenferrie. From the point of divergence the line was slightly less than one mile long, and it had only one intermediate station — Barker. There were four road over-bridges and two level crossings, including one over the busy Barkers Road. The line supported a passenger and goods service, and was electrified in December 1922, at the same time as the main line to Box Hill. There were a number of peak hour services which ran from Flinders Street station (Melbourne) to Kew, but in 1938 all but one of these were diverted to the Ashburton line, where traffic was growing. This had an adverse effect on Kew traffic, as passengers from Kew needed to cross over a footbridge at Hawthorn to change trains, and the main line trains were usually already crowded by the time they reached Hawthorn. At about the same time the off-peak trains were replaced by road buses. In 1952 all passenger trains were withdrawn, but the road bus service continued for many years. Goods trains were finally withdrawn in 1957, and the railway was dismantled in 1958-59. The small French village of Vignacourt was always behind the front lines. For much of the First World War it was a staging point, casualty clearing station and recreation area for troops of all nationalities moving up to and then back from the battlefields on the Somme. Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt tells the story of how one enterprising photographer took the opportunity of this passing traffic to establish a business taking portrait photographs. Captured on glass, printed into postcards and posted home, the photographs made by the Thuillier family enabled Australian soldiers to maintain a fragile link with loved ones in Australia. The Thuillier collection covers many of the significant aspects of Australian involvement on the Western Front, from military life to the friendships and bonds formed between the soldiers and civilians. The photo was taken at 8.15am on Friday 12 September 1919. The D class was a passenger and mixed traffic steam locomotive which operated on the Victorian Railways from 1902 to 1974. Originally it was introduced on mainline express passenger services, but they were quickly superseded by the much larger A2 class and were relegated to secondary and branch line passenger and goods service, where they continued in service for the next fifty years. The D716 was probably built at the Newport Workshops, post 1910 and before 1914. The expansion of Melbourne's population into new suburbs early in the 20th century, and the delay of the suburban electrification project, meant there was the need for faster and more powerful steam locomotives for the suburban rail network. In 1908, the basic design was adapted to create a more powerful locomotive. They were put to work on longer and hillier suburban routes including the Lilydale line. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.George Lynch standing alongside a DD Locomotive.
