Contains an article "The Lucky City", written by Michael Davie about Melbourne and its city, in particular its trams. Has a photo of a City Circle tram (866) on page 22. Gateway published the Federal Airports Corporation as an inbound magazine for overseas travellers. In an email from Roberto 2/10/2014 - "G'day Warren, Yes indeed the Gateway Magazine with a younger Roberto at South Depot. Brings to mind that South Depot did the bulk of the tramways media through the 90s until closure. On the list of programs I have in the archive is Totally Wild (Channel 10), Monty the Weatherman did 4 crosses live (Channel 9), 7.30 Reports (ABC), we hosted 4 Corners around the network and a few other programs on Channel 7. Plenty of newspapers and radio. Handy with a close to city location the PTC sent the media to South for tram stories. I have the 6 Trammie banners from the Trammies Exhibition at the Immigration Museum where we worked together back in 2003. I've used them occasionally and may need them for a tram presentation in March next year....would they be handy as a part of a exhibit at Hawthorn? The Connies are still going strong....festivals and events, sometimes in schools and we've co-funded 2 tram festivals in Kolkata with the Calcutta Tramways in 2012 and 2013....environment central to the themes. Kevin keeps me posted on how things are going at Hawthorn. I met Doug Prosser at Hawthorn a few months ago and all looking good. Kevin sends me copies of The Bellcord....and just last week I was on the Hawthorn Museum website reading about the Box Hill - Doncaster Tram for a Connie performance in Box Hill late in November. His father ...Henry was a familiar persona in Union Road and around the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre for decades. He lived all his life within 3 kilometres of his radio shop. Son of Catherine and ‘Mick’ Jamieson, Henry was born in 1927 in View Street, Surrey Hills and was educated at Box Hill Grammar School. His father died when he was young and Henry took a job as a technical assistant with the Commonwealth Film Unit. Film was a life-long interest and he became a longstanding member of CATHS (Cinema and Theatre Historical Society of Victoria). Henry also had a profound love of music which was reflected in his work and hobbies. He joined Adrian Knowles, who had started his radio shop at 149 Union Road in the 1940s, and trained at RMIT as a radio tradesman. In time Henry took over the business. When 3MBS established in Kew, Henry was an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer. For some years Henry and a co-producer presented a prime time Saturday evening programme 'Bach to Bernstein'; later his distinctive voice could be heard in the early morning time slot, 'Daybreak'. Henry was also a staunch supporter of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and served as its President for a number of years. Henry died in 2011. This rare civic testimonial is historically ...James Robbie Mathers was born in Pleasant Creek [Stawell] in 1867 to James Allen Mathers, a storekeeper and former councillor. He was later to become a storekeeper in Gippsland and then at Heywood, near Portland. Following a move to Melbourne, he established a real estate business. He initially lived in Hawthorn, before moving his business to Kew where he traded as Mathers & McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, and later at 283 Burke Road. For a short time, the family resided at Landene, in Cotham Road. They were to finally move to Rosalea, in Dale Street, Deepdene. Following the death of Cr Henry Kellett in 1924, Mathers was elected unopposed as representative of College Ward. Elected Mayor in September 1930, he convened a meeting of citizens in the Town Hall in Walpole Street to form a local unemployment relief committee. His social initiatives included handing over council-owned premises in Brougham Street, the building re-purposed as a workshop for the unemployed, who were also granted free use of the Kew Municipal Baths. The Mayoress, Jean Mathers, set to work raising funds through charity balls, and also raised funds for St Anthony’s Orphanage in Wellington Street. James Robbie Mathers died on 8 April 1945. Unfortunately, due to a clash of commitments Andrew apologised for not being able to attend and we are delighted he will now be our speaker at our next meeting on Wednesday 9th October. As mentioned in our last newsletter, this presentation was very well received when Andrew was the keynote speaker at the recent Regional Conference of the Association of Eastern Historical Societies. Andrew is an independent professional historian who has published many commissioned local and institutional histories since his first book, Box Hill, forty years ago. He has now written sixteen books, four of which have won prizes, on subjects ranging from local history, sport, education and biography. Andrew received his doctorate of letters from the University of Melbourne in 2004 because of the excellence of a body of work, not one single piece, as in a thesis. He has been a consistent supporter of our Society and a long term member, who has spoken at a number of our meetings, over many years.1:20:57 duration Digital MP3 File 27.7 MB andrew lemon, audio recording, eltham, eltham district historical society, heritage advocacy, meeting, society meeting -

The original building was constructed of solid red brick and consisted of seven rooms. In May 1924 a further four rooms, also in red brick, were added. The school opened with an initial enrolment of 147 students in Prep to Grade 6. A further 72 children were admitted during the year, making a total enrolment in the first year of 219. The land facing Kenmare Street was purchased in 1919, adding another 2 acres to the 5.5 acres which the school occupied in 1917. The first Principal was Charles Hyland, who was assisted by three teachers. The first official meeting of the School Council in May 1917 reveals that the building was in some senses a shell, requiring additional input from parents. Mention is made of the need for asphalting of playing areas, providing a letter box and electric lights for the lobby, double room, office and sewing room. Mont Albert was the first School in Victoria to have the interior purely constructed of Victoria hardwood, from floor to ceiling. An Honour Board was erected in 1919. mont albert central school, mont albert primary school, mont albert, schools -

Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill ...This was the home of the Offszanka family from 1913; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was a furrier. Both he and his wife Ida, nee Schade, (1882-1963) were born in Germany. They married in Victoria in 1908. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. Members of the Offszanka family lived in this property from its beginnings for more than 70 years. Such longstanding tenancy is unusual.Black and white photo of a timber Edwardian home at 44 Guildford Road Surrey Hills. Plan, JC Brown, Detail of Step Butt and Screen for Miniature Rifle Range, 26 February 1910
... On 19 July 1907, The Box Hill Reporter published an article... for Works Victoria / 26-2-10 On 19 July 1907, The Box Hill Reporter ...On 19 July 1907, The Box Hill Reporter published an article on the Miniature Rifle Range. It stated: "Miniature Rifle Range for Kew. The Kew rifle club has made arrangements for the establishment of a miniature rifle range. The Kew borough council has provided a site in the yard at the rear of the town hall, fronting Brougham street. The site has been inspected by the military authorities, who have approved of the locality selected and the arrangements to be made to render the range absolutely safe. The plans are at present being prepared, and it is expected that the range will be completed within the next two months. The range will be under the direct control of the rifle club, subject to the supervision of a joint committee from the council and the club. The first committee will consist of Crs Wishart (mayor), Kellett, and Hiscock as representing the council, and Captain Argyle and Mr S. Abbott representing the rifle club. The range when completed will be available for the use of cadets, friendly societies, and other miniature rifle clubs in the district. Miniature rifle ranges are now occupying a great deal of attention in Great Britain, on the Continent, and in America. Lord Roberts, writing recently on the subject, remarks- "While I do not for a moment pretend that miniature rifle shooting is, in all respects, as useful as knowing how to shoot on a long range, I am satisfied that men can learn to shoot on miniature ranges, and that unless miniature ranges are very generally made use of, the greatest majority in this country will never learn to shoot at all." It is possible by this means also to divert the at present dangerous enthusiasm of uninstructed youths for the pea rifle into safer and more useful channels."Important early document identifying the specifications for a miniature rifle range in central Kew. Rifle clubs and rifle ranges were an important element in defending Victorians and Australians to outside threats. Single page plan (folded), created and approved in 1910, listing the approved specifications for a miniature rifle range in Brougham Street, Kew.Handwritten signature: J.M. / Staff officer for Works Victoria / 26-2-10rifle clubs - rifle ranges, miniature rifle ranges, rifle clubs -- kew (vic) -

Philippa Bridges was born in Pentonville, Middlesex in 1820. She was engaged to John Frederic James before she left England and they were married soon after he arrived in Melbourne in 1853. He was the second registrar at the University of Melbourne (1856-1864) and died suddenly in 1864. The couple had 4 daughters (3 surviving - Mary, Philippa and Elizabeth) and one son, John Frederic Chase James, who lived at 'St Helena', Norfolk Road, Surrey Hills. Their 2nd daughter, Philippa Sophia assisted in the school; she pre-deceased her mother and died at 'Campden' on 18 March 1900. Mrs James' obituary in the Box Hill Reporter on 5 May 1911 states that she opened an earlier school called Grantown House in Nicholson Street, Fitzroy opposite the Exhibition Building after her husband's death. Grantown House is extant and has a National Estate Register Listing. The citation for it states that Mrs Philippa James leased it from owner William Ross and operated a ladies school from here from 1872 until 1878. She had other schools, both before her marriage and one in Balaclava named 'Westbourne'. ... High School, the Box Hill North High School, later to be named... the secondary years formed the basis of a new High School, the Box Hill ...Mont Albert State School was officially opened on 23rd April 1917. The school became Mont Albert Central School in 1918, taking in Forms 1 and 2. The school remained a Central School until 1964, when the secondary years formed the basis of a new High School, the Box Hill North High School, later to be named Koonung Secondary College. This is part of a large collection of material related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to Surrey Hills and Mont Albert. Ernest Lance Young was the son of Ernest Augustus Young (1891-1985) and Ruby Nichell Whitby (1892-1984). Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills. The family lived at 5 York Street, Surrey Hills. Electoral roll for 1937 gives the house name as 'Whitby Lodge'. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. Young's Motor Products have manufactured products for the automotive and other related industries, including chemical trades, since 1920. Business history: Young's commenced trading in 1917 when Mr Ernest Augustus Young started selling paint brushes. At this time the company was known as E.A.Young & Co. with business premises in Queen Street Melbourne. Ernest soon expanded into paints and other products for the rapidly growing automotive trade and by 1920 was well recognised as a leading supplier. At this time canvas hoods were the norm and Ernest produced a "Canvas Hood Dressing" which gained acceptance as 'the one to buy'. This product was exported throughout the world. By 1930 Young's range had expanded and the product range included items like distilled water, gasket cement, vulcanising heat patches, rust prevention and many more diverse products. Young's name then, was so well known in Australia and the world, that a letter could be addressed just "Young's Melbourne" and it would reach the company. Young's survived the great depression, but in 1939 the Australian government commandeered the factory with all plant and equipment, thus closing Young's for the duration of the WW2. Ernest continued to make products at home for the war effort. When his son, Lance, returned home from overseas war service in Singapore, the Young's factory was re-established at 405 Canterbury Road, Canterbury near Chatham Station and worked to regain markets lost in the 1940s. By 1980 Lance Young wished to retire, his immediate family didn't want to continue the business and Lance believed Australia would lose a great asset if he just closed the company. He sought to find someone within the motor trade who would uphold the Young's principles of product and service and in 1981 Allan Kennedy & Sons bought the business.Lance Young was retained as an active consultant until his death in October 1999, aged 84. Products: Superseal for radiators, tyre dressing (tyre black), car shampoo, hood dressing, leather and vinyl cleaner. The factory was later elased to B&D Rollerdoors. He was one ...The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. Horrie became an apprentice in woodwork / carpentry at Vine's timber yard before serving in World War 1. Horrie's father died in 1919 and in the same year he bought 3 cows and established his own dairy on his mother's property on the corner of Goodwood Street and Boisdale Road. In the 1920s Horrie built the first house in Goodwood Street. He went on to build others in the street including his own at No 7 Goodwood Street. He did all the joinery and internal fittings for this. [REF: Oral testimony: Horrie Breeden to Jocelyn Hall in 1979.] In the 1990s the owner of 7 Goodwood Street discovered a branding iron under the house; this is presumed to relate to Horrie Breeden's dairy. It was donated to SHNC's collection. Horrace Bruce Breeden (7 July 1898-24 January 1988) was son of Charles Henry Breeden and Lavinia Maria Darby, both born Warwickshire; buried in Box Hill Cemetery.
