Photograph - black and white. Photograph of Pall Mall, Bendigo, 1857, taken from View Point. The following notes were written on the back in pencil by Frederick Douglas Jones, Solicitor. 'Bendigo, 1857. Bank of Victoria, View St., in foreground. '23' was afterwards Grant's Confectionery shop next 'Abbot's New Times.' The Victoria Hotel became the National Bank of Australasia. The Colonial Bank of Australia is next to the left. 'Edmondson's and the building next Colonial. Bank., became the Bendigo Arcade. The 2 story building to right of the Victoria Hotel became the Stock Exchange as auction room of Shadrach E.R.Jones who was also a Doctor of Medicine. Building to left of the Colonial. Bank was the shop of J.Nelson Jones Chemist afterwards a Brewer, he came to Australia 1848 and died in Ararat 9/1/14 (88). Doug Pleasance, donor of these items, worked for the AWC and closely with Wendy Powitt, obtaining these uniform examples. About the Olympic Uniforms Doug wrote- 1. The Official Uniform which was used for travel and all official functions. This included: a tailored blazer and trouser/skirt (all water repellent) by Fletcher Jones, pure wool olive-green faille fabric by Foster Valley, cotton PE formal shirt by Pelaco, pure wool knitwear by Spangaro, printed wool tie by T D Noone, wool nylon socks by Holeproof and footwear by Hush Puppy. 2. Opening Ceremony Uniform a lightweight wool fabric printed with floral designs that had been inspired by the work of Australian artist Margaret Preston. This included: Lightweight W/PE shorts by Fletcher Jones in Foster Valley Fabric, socks by Holeproof and footwear by Hush Puppy. 3. Village Clothing was designed to be highly visible garments to make it easy to spot the Aussie and helped to contribute to good team spirit. Hans - Wolter von Gruenewaldt, German P.O.W (Ex South African - Mining engineer) painted these scenes and figures as murals on the walls of the Camp 13 Recreational hall. After WW2 the hall was purchased by the Murchison R.S.L as its headquarters in 1955. These paintings can now be seen at the David Jones Nursing Home in Murchison.Small photo album, with a collection of painted scenes and figures as murals on the walls of camp 13 Recreational hall. The album also includes photos of visitors to the Internment camps, Japanese Chan, Oki and Takamura families at the Tatura Historical Society, and visitors to the German War Cemetery during 1992/93. -
