The Wycheproof Court House Opened 24-9-1890.The Law Department Closed the Court House during the 1980s. The building became the home of the Wycheproof Craft Group and then the Wycheproof And District Historical Society. Financial support from Heritage Victoria enabled interior renovations to be completed in 2007.This is the only known photo of the Opening of the Wycheproof Court House. A slide image of the old Legacy House in Market Street from 1957. It shows children and people gathered to go on an outing to the sea known for many years as Operation Float. It is taken from Collins Street looking down Market Street towards Flinders St. The entry to Legacy House is in the shadows to the left of the cream Matthew Lang building. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meetings and the girls classes on the second floor of the building but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. Finally it was sold in 1954 and Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government. As part of the conditions of the donation it was named in memory of David H Dureau. Renovations were needed to the 289-299 Swanston St building so this slide shows that Legacy were still in the Market St building in 1957 while they occurred. Murray Comrie Collection. The house in this photo was once the residence of the Tarnagulla police officer. The town block where the house was originally built was the base for policing in Tarnagulla from 1878 until the 1990s. The house was built in 1878 as a residence and adjacent was a lockup, office and stable (shown in THA-2019.0031). This house was sold for removal in in the late 1960s and replaced with a prefabricated residence and small office brought from Bealiba. These as well as the lockup are still in place (as of 2019), but are no longer used. It is not known where this house was moved to. Raglan Street is located within the heritage precinct of central Ballarat. This house was built around the turn of the century, with sewerage being added in 1908. The hallway is lined with pressed metal, the remainder of the metal being used at Talbot Hall. Parma House was bult by Italian born Fabrizio Crippa. It was restored from a burnt wreck to Villa Parma by Richard Rigby and Franchek. Walls were scraped back to the original, and burnt umber detailing added. A group of widows gathered at Legacy House sorting stamps. Same film as 00629. Names unknown. The widows have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. The large home in foreground is the Guest House “Kia Ora” owned by George Barber on Lot 25 of the Village Settlement. The house above it to the left was Richardson’s house. The home of Jeanie who had left it when the picture was taken.The buildings furthest to the right of “Kia Ora” were the homestead of Isaac Jeeves of 1863 – 1871 the building furthest right with the black opening in it was the house with the tree fern floor. The flat ground above and left of Isaac’s pointed roof barn is where the creek changed its course in the 1934 flood and destroyed £4000 worth of the Rowse family’s tulip bulbs. Above the flat is Francis Matthew Child’s homestead, in the creek to the right of which can be seen the horizontal structure of the swing bridge to the sawmill of the Childs Bros which cannot be seen but in the forest to the right of the mill (bridge) can be seen a number of logs in the mill yard. The two cleared strips immediately behind Childs home were the Richardson’s original holdings and the house in the gully at the far side of the great clearing is that of the guest house “Glenrivers” belonging to W Lucas and his wife Catherine nee Child. The Richardson homestead “Harmony Vale” is behind the forest trees in the right centre. The construction of Seaview commenced in 1860, after David Talbot, purchased the land from James Atkinson,It had been suggested that it was intended to be double storied but there is no evidence of how that would have been accomplished. Following Talbot’s insolvency, Michael O’Reilly leased the house in 1862 until 1876 when he left for Melbourne.William Powling (Solicitor) acquired the house for Eight hundred and twenty three pounds in 1890 and lived there the rest of his life. A photo of Legacy House from 1997. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289 Swanston St was purchased. Melbourne Legacy is still using three floors of the building, with tenants on the ground floor. Plus two photos from earlier time that have been digitised from slides. The brown photo would have been from late 1950s and then the green is after it was repainted in 1961 (according to the slide mount) An article mentions the purchase price was undisclosed. It says the purchase was possible due to a generous gift of money from overseas in 1944. The building would be called the David H Dureau Memorial Building at the request of the donors. Junior Legatees were given gifts. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves.
