Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. As the population of Wodonga grew in the late 1960s and 1970s, development focussed on the central section of High Street. The Wodonga Mall was built in 1969 on the corner of Stanley and High Streets in Wodonga and was the location of a variety of small businesses including a chemist and Sarroff's Dry Cleaners.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to the community throughout the 20th century. These clubs play an important sporting and social role within these communities.The Wodonga Bowling Club was formally constituted on 9 September 1925. Percy Lingford was elected as President and Edward William Owens was elected Secretary. The Associate (Ladies) Branch of the club was constituted on 22 August with Doll Connell elected as president and May Hicks elected as secretary. The Albury Golf Club was initially formed in 1899 with President Mr. G.A. Thompson and Mr, James Stephen as Honorary Secretary. The Baranduda and District School Sports Association held its first interschool sporting competition in 1936. Schools included in this association were Allan’s Flat, Bonegilla, Baranduda, Leneva, Mitta Junction, Staghorn Flat and Wodonga West. This commemorative trophy, The Thomas Chubb Shield, was donated to the Sports Association by Mr. Albert John Chubb, in memory of his father. Mr. Thomas Chubb was a successful businessman in Albury and an active supporter of many institutions and community organisations in the Albury Wodonga area. Mr. Albert Chubb actively supported school sports carnivals across the district, including being the official starter at many events.This trophy has local social and cultural significance as it provides evidence of sporting and social interaction between the small schools in the Wodonga and surrounding communities,A wooden shield presented to recognise winners of the Baranduda and District School Sports Association from 1936 to 1949. Framed portrait of William Quayle who was President of the Association for Advancement of the Blind in 1905. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Quayle sits on a wooden chair, wearing a gray three piece suit, white shirt and black bowtie. A small pink flower sits in his lapel and the chain from a fob watch is tucked into his waistcoat. Mr Quayle was born on the Isle of Mann, and the Manx Society of Victoria made a donation towards this painting, which was unveiled by his granddaughter. It began operation from January 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “ The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This hymn book is significant historically for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The connection of this book to the Mission to Seamen and to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. The brown leather-covered bound book has an embossed inscription on the spine and an impressed cross symbol on the front cover. It has red leaf pages (681 pages). The music and words were compiled and arranged by editor William Henry Monk, and published in London. This Revised and Enlarged edition was printed in London by William Clowes & Sons Ltd. The book's title is "Hymns Ancient and Modern". The inscription shows it was given as a gift in 1884. It has since been added to our St Nicholas Seamen's Church Collection. The Volunteer Air Observers Corps was an Australian air defence organisation of World War II.It was formed on 31 December 1941 to support the Royal Australian Air Force by sighting and observing aircraft over Australia.It swiftly established observation posts across Australia and provided information to the RAAF's regional air control posts. As the threat to Australia declined its role was expanded to include coast watching, assisting air traffic control and weather reporting. The corps was staffed by civilian volunteers and reached a peak strength of 24,000 personnel and 2,656 observation posts in 1944. After the end of the war the VAOC was reduced to a cadre in December 1945 and was disbanded on 10 April 1946. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. The 2018 event will be the 28th Kangaroo Hoppet, with cross country skiers travelling from across the country and overseas to compete.Set of 13 colour photographs of the street parade to celebrate the first Official Hoppet race run at Falls Creek in 1991. In 1977 a group of Mount Beauty cross country skiers formed the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990.
