Obituary from the Prahran Telegraph, 21-6-1929, headed "Death of an old Caulfield Identity" Edward Rowney. After coming from South Australia in 1887, worked in Ballarat as a horse tram driver and then moved to Caulfield in 1888 working for the Caulfield Horse Tramway that ran between Elsternwick and Glenhuntly. Postcard, The Post Office & Burns Statue Sturt St Ballarat, c1905
Image of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets looking north towards Lydiard St. Photograph shows a horse drawn tram turning from Sturt into Lydiard St North, while another crosses Lydiard St, heading west along the north side of the street. Photo shows the Post Office, the Robert Burns statue, and the large arc lamp in the middle of the intersection. Two copies held. Programme, 1956 Olympic Games, Rowing Programme Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, 26-11-1956
The 1956 Melbourne Olympics saw the rowing events held on Lake Wendouree Ballarat. This was only set of events held outside Melbourne Region. The Programme, lists the scoreboard abbreviations, the Games Committee, map of the course, Rowing events Committee and Council, Officials, each event, finalists, names position, previous winners, transport services, though did not include Ballarat trams and on the rear cover a simplified programme of events and a map and list of competition venues. Cover printed by Sands McDougall Pty Ltd Melbourne with text by Alex King & Sons Pty Ltd Ballarat. Two contestants of interest are Murray Riley and Mervyn Wood who came 3rd in the double sculls. Wood became the NSW police commissioner in 1977 and Riley was a corrupt NSW Policemen and after leaving the police force became highly involved in the Nugan Hand Bank which was highly involved in drug trafficing, and crime syndicates. Frontpage has a photo titled "Trams are their hobby" showing a photo of a large group of tram enthusiasts visiting Ballarat as part of the Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA) Easter meeting and Ballarat tour of 1962. Page 3 has an article titled "Their hobby is electric traction" - about some 84 members chartering a rail motor to Ballarat on Saturday 21 April 1962, and the use of two special trams. Quotes Mr. Ken Craven about the association. Was welcomed by Mr L. Denmead of the SEC. Notes no member of the tour was a current transport worker and that it was the second such tour to Ballarat. Value was not printed, but equivalent about to a 2/-, 1/-., 6d, 3d and a 1d based on the paper size.Demonstrates a toy or item used by children to simulate or play being a tram conductor. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Fitted with sliding doors, Remote Control equipment. See webpage btm.org.au/trams/504.html Spent it appears all its life at Preston or North Fitzroy Depot. Yields information about the history of the Ballarat Tramways from horse to the closure of the electric trams in 1971. Gives a good understanding of the development and operation of the tramways. Has a strong association with the author.Book, 64 pages, gloss art paper, in black ink with a light brown card cover in green ink, centre stapled, titled "The Ballarat Tramways" Details history of Ballarat tramways, its tramcars and the involvement of the various operators. Has maps and photographs. Written by Keith Kings and published by the Victorian Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society at the time of the closure of the Ballarat system. Inside front cover is a typed sheet of amendments for the book - typed on Charles Martin Watermarked paper. Has details of the various organisations that published the book on the rear cover. 114.2 - as for 114.1 - but with many hand written notes etc. 114.3 - as for 114.1 - but with "City of Ballarat" stamped on front cover. 114.4 - as for 114.1 - but with "To Mr. L.
