The Dibb Report into mainland defence of Australia,1986, among other things identified the requirement for protection of key assets in Northern Australia and the possibility of involving Army Reserve (Ares) units in this thus releasing regular forces for offensive operations. Dibb also pointed out that this defined role would result in a huge lift in Ares morale. In June 1988, the 3rd Division (3Div) conducted a Tactical Exercise without Troops (TEWT), Exercise ‘Distant Trumpet’ in the Katherine- Darwin area to study problems associated with defence against low level incursions against Tindal RAAF Base. Exercise ‘Northern Explorer’ followed in October of that year when units of the 3Div including A Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles sent patrol groups to get a first taste of environment and conditions. Post-Exercise reports had to include recommendations re: health, equipment and adaptation of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) in preparation for the new role deploying to Northern Australia. The first deployment by 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles was in 1988. Deployments continued in following years. In September 1993, 3 Troop (Wangaratta) VMR Squadron 4/19 PWLH commanded by Captain Kelvin Robertson deployed to NT. The training began with airfield defence at Tindal followed by a 1000km recon into Arnhem Land in four Landrovers. The troop reported on the conditions of the roads, airfields, bridges (mainly causeways) resources such as fuel supplies in the towns and infrastructure. Each troop taking different route. 3 Troop had the Northern route through Kakadu National park across the East Alligator River to Oenpelli then to Maningrida and Ramangining and south to the Central Arnhem Road and back to Tindal Air force Base Major Annett later commanded 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse, and later again 4th Brigade 2nd Division.. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Pilgrimage to the Shrine 1992, 1992
Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. The church used for the service varies.A record of the Widows' Sunday event for Legacy week in 1992.Colour photo x 9 of a pilgrimage to the Shrine in 1992.The paper label says "To mark the start of 'Legacy Week' members of the Legacy family gathered for the annual church service and pilgrimage to the Shrine. This year the Hawthorn City Pipe Band led members of the Legacy Family down St. Kilda Road. The haunting sound of the pipes were a stirring prelude to the pilgrimage into the inner shrine."pilgrimage, wreath laying ceremony, widows, widows' sunday -
Melbourne Legacy
Photograph - Photo, Anzac commemoration for students 1982, 1982
A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. This was taken in 1982. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. They are named as two Junior Legatees, Peter Manning and either Bridget Riggs or Gayle Goulding (the two labels are contradictory). It is possible one of the labels belong to another photo (item 01200) as they were found in the same envelope and it appears to be the same boy in both photos. However both labels were attached to this photo. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Labelled S15 in red pen it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history.A record of a ceremony for school students at the Shrine.Black and white photo of an Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for students at the Shrine in 1982 with two junior Legatees at the Cenotaph (World War II memorial). Two paper labels typed in black ink.Photo is stamped with Copyright of Herald and Weekly Times in green ink. Handwritten 'Peter Manning and Bridget Riggs' in purple texta. '820423/120' in blue pen. Label says: 'At Melbourne Legacy's Annual School Children's Anzac Commemoration this year Junior legatees, Gayle Goulding and Peter Manning representing all Junior Legatees, laid a wreath at the foot of the World War Two Memorial.' Other label says: Junior Legatees Peter Manning and Bridget Riggs observe a minutes silence after laying a wreath near the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance. They were among 1100 children from 54 schools who attended Melbourne Legacy's 51st Annual school children's Anzac Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine. Photo courtesy Sun News-Pictorial.' The photo was also used as a Highlights page in an Annual Report. The caption confirmed the names as Peter Manning and Bridget Riggs.anzac commemoration for students, wreath laying ceremony -
