Horton's Reward Claim. This group of miners also worked another area called 'The Heather Bell" approx. 200 yards further up the gully. About half a pennyweight to the dish is obtained from the wash near the creek. They are panning off 3 dwts per day off one man's ground. This claim is about the best fitted up on the field. It is worked with a sluice box with iron ripples and feeder to match. The latter is a great advantage as there is a great fall below the claim for the tailings.Photo shows seven men working a goldfield using shovels and picks.mining, mount william, people -

Parks Victoria - Mount Buffalo Chalet
Clock
Appears to be an original piece from Mt Buffalo Chalet. Purpose made for the Chalet as inscribe d with Mount Buffalo Chalet to Clock face most likely in Victorian Railways era, post 1924.. "Interestingly, the photograph indicates that a big round clock was mounted on the fenestration just behind and above the cabinet (fig 36). Reminiscent of railway clocks, it was perhaps introduced by the Victorian Railways after 1924. it resembles the clock that was subsequently mounted on the wall above the Chalet reception desk, and more recently stored away for safety with other movable items in the Chalet. Closer comparison however seems to indicate that the two clocks have different wooden frames and probably differ in diameter." "A number of specific items, which have been useful in the day to day operations of the chalet, remain in the building, with each complementing the other to provide context, meaning and character to their setting. items such as the hall porter bell, the many signs providing information to guests, the wall clock, barometer and dinner bell point to the Chalet being a well-run social institution with a pleasant environment for rest, recreation and congenial company." (Pg 81, Historica, MBCC)Large circular clock with "Mount Buffalo Chalet" printed in black on face. Clock has Roman numerals in black with two black hands against a white face. Document - BASIL WATSON
Basil George Watson was an aviation pioneer born in Bendigo 12/10/1893. The family moved to Melbourne when he was a child. In 1914 he went to England to work as an engineer for the Sopwith Aviation Company. He also took flying lessons and received his licence in 1915. He now worked as a test pilot for Sopwith but when a crash rendered him unfit for military duty, he returned to Australia in late 1915. He designed and constructed his own biplane in the back yard of his Elsternwick home. At the end of 1916 he tested his plane by flying from Point Cook to Bendigo and then to Melbourne. This included an aviation display in Bendigo. He followed this by flying to Warnambool 25/1/1916. He then set up an experimental airmail flight from Melbourne to Mount Gambier. On 28th March 1917, Watson was demonstrating aerobatics for the entertainment of AIF servicemen at Point Cook, when his plane collapsed and fell into the ocean close to shore. Unfortunately, Watson was tangled in the plane's wires and died. On hearing of his death, the bells of St Pauls in Bendigo and the Bendigo fire bell tolled.A paper detailing the life of Bendigo pilot Basil Watson, one of the first Australian pilots. 4 pages.aviation, basil watson, sopwith -

Book, Flying Pineapple Media, To The Four Corners Of The World, 1/1/2011 (estimated)
This book is the definitive history of the surf travels by Peter Troy. Troy's travels are the stuff of legends. An original and influential figure in the early days of surfing at Bells Beach, Troy left Australia in 1963 and roamed the planet with surfboard under arm from Europe to Hawaii, South America to South Africa, introducing surfing to Brazil and discovering untold perfect waves like Nias off the coast of Sumatra. He documented every step of this remarkable journey in letters home which were rediscovered after his untimely death in 2008.This book represents the major surf travel history of one of the great legends in world surfing Peter Troy from Torquay. In 1962 Troy was one of the founders of the Bells Beach Surf Contest, the longest running surf contest in the world. He was an intrepid surf traveller who during the period 1963-1966 introduced surfing to the country of Brazil and explored the four corners of the globe for waves. A group of males play a game of blind cricket, possibly on the front lawn of the RVIB buildings in St Kilda Road. Three fieldsmen stand close, as a bowler prepares to underarm throw towards a man holding a bat. Behind a small box, acting as a wicket, another male partially crouches with his arms outstretched to clasp the incoming ball. As the bowler's arm is just out of shot, it is unknown if he holds a cane wicket ball (with bells inside) or another small object which makes a sound.Lantern slide of males playing cricketroyal victorian institute for the blind, recreation -

Instrument - Telephone, 1877
William Jackson Thomas is credited with making the first ever telephone call in Victoria. Thomas was a customs inspector at the Geelong Customs House and a keen amateur scientist, astronomer and woodworker. He experimented with electricity and induction to develop his own telephone soon after its invention by Alexander Graham Bell. He built most of the experimental telephone equipment himself – right down to the screws. According to the Geelong Advertiser, on 27 December 1877, Thomas held a telephone conversation with friends in a summer house 40 metres away. This instrument is of great historic significance as the instrument which made Australia's first telephone call in 1877, between two houses in Geelong. Although predated by Alexander Graham Bell's invention, this instrument is an example of Australian innovation and design; characteristic of Australian communications history. The instrument has excellent provenance, carrying a descriptive plaque about the use of the item. As an early prototype of a telephone, it is an incredibly rare example of communications technology.Stained wooden rectangular box containing mechanism with circular turned section at one end being the receiver and transmitter. There are 3 metal screws at the rear and a leather strap running from one of these to the transmitter/receiver.
