Photograph of a double storied stone building, it has a three quarters length open verandah along the first floor. The name 'Symonds Criterion Family Hotel' is painted above the first floor. There is a large lamp on a bracket on the right hand side of the building. To the left of the main structure there is a smaller weatherboard building with the word 'Hotel' painted along the top. There are several groups of people both on the ground and on the balcony, also in front of the hotel is a very up market buggy/wagonette with a coachman? Driving. This hotel was on the corner of Mundy and Hargreaves Streets, and is significant as centre of events as it overlooked the original Market Square. Original photo is part of the Batchelder Collection owned by the State Library of Victoria. Published in 'An American on the Goldfields' p. 38-39 with description and details. Central Deborah mine, one of Bendigo's two remaining active mines. It's 102 years since gold was first discovered at Golden Square, but today only two Deborah mines are working where once 3000 mines hummed. The Bendigo field had yielded 22,000,000 ounces valued at 110,000.000 pounds and three times more on today's value but last years output was only 10,000 ounces and the year before 13000 ounces. Mentions holidaying in Java, Malaya & Sumatra. Mr Stanistreet is a pastoralist engaged I sheep raising, will be passing through via Alice springs and Adelaide. His brother a mining man requested him to convey his impressions of the Tennant field. Goes on to ask him to assist where he is able.
