A two page account of the end of World War 2 and mentions of Legatees who had roles in the current of the Japanese. In "Bouganville the surrender was made to Legatee SG Savige." Also "Legatee J.D.Rogers (Brigadier) represented Australia at the Japanese surrender at Singapore to Lord Louis Mountbatten and led the group of six officers who met and escorted the Japanese delegates. . " Was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. This saw could have been used in industry or in a home situation. It was made by the H. Disston & Sons of U.S.A. This company was established in 1850 by Henry Disston and by the 20th century it was the largest maker of hand saws in the world. The hand saws used today differ little from this early model. This saw is retained as a good example of a hand tool that is over 100 years old. This hand saw has a triangular-shaped metal blade with a serrated edge on the straight side of the blade The handle is wooden with five metal screws. These whale harpoons belonged to Arthur Ashby. The longer one was his personal hand-forged harpoon. Arthur Ashby was a harpoonist written about in the book, "Killers of Eden". They were handed down to his son, Norman Ashby who gave them to the donor's father for safe-keeping as he did not have a permanent residence. Two harpoons. .1 is a hand held iron harpoon. It is very long with an open neck at one end and a large blade at the other. .2 is smaller and was used in harpoon guns. This blazer belonged to Gordon Burleigh (1888-1956) who lived at ‘Macken Hill’ in Mepunga. He was the ninth child of James and Janet Burleigh who were early settlers in the Nullawarre area. Gordon Burleigh was a prominent and successful sportsman playing football and cricket in the local area and playing one game in 1914 in the Victorian Football League for Geelong. The blazer indicates that the cricket team he played for was the Premier team for 1934, 1935, and 1936 and the ‘S.W.’ on the blazer pocket may indicate South Warrnambool but it is more likely to be ‘South West’, perhaps the name of the district the team played in. This blazer is of considerable interest as it belonged to Gordon Burleigh, a prominent sportsman in the district in the early decades of the 20th century.This is a maroon-coloured blazer which belonged to Gordon Burleigh of Mepunga. It has gold-coloured edging and piping on the sleeves, pockets and edges (collar etc) of the blazer. It has two material-covered buttons and stitched buttonholes and gold stitching on the pocket. This apron was made by Janie Winter in 1969, Form 1 Needlework class - Teacher Mrs Church. Binding trim is hand sewn as is the embroidered name. Constance Ross was an early pupil at the school attending classes during the Kennedy era (1876 - 1902), teacher until retiring in 1935, but returning 1940 - 1943 during the war years. Constance served on the Clarendon Council 1925 - 1949. In 1954 the school named a visual education centre at the Mair Street campus the IC Ross classroom. The room was furnished and equipped by the Old Collegians Association to honour the long school service of Constance Ross. It later became Herbert's - now demolished and is the present site of the Foodworks Supermarket.Temple's store was on the corner of Ruskin Street and Nicholson Street. George Temple (1832-1918) established the store in about 1888. The Kew Historical Society's Fashion & Design collection includes a small and representative collection of reticules, purses and handbags, purchased, inherited or collected by members of the Society. These items date from the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, and conform to fashions and styles popular during the period of their use. Some of the items are handmade, while others are mass-produced commercial products. Hand-beaded evening purse, with silver frame and finger ring. Very fine black and cream check silk lined in the bodice and sleeves with fine grey silk. Long sleeves are finished with a 4cm deep cuff, trimmed with a double row of cording, and a 1.5cm wide pleated frill. Two black shiny buttons trim the cuff(possibly plastic), which fastens with three press-studs. Waist is defined with one band of corded fabric. Two bands of cording outline the V neckline, which is also finished with a pleat frill. Cording, and three rows of hand - gathering outline a shaped frill at the hemline-alternately 31cm and 46cm deep. Seven black buttons fasten the front of the bodice. A placket extends into the skirt, fastened by four press-studs. Skirt has four knife pleats each side of the centre placket. Four knife pleats at each hemline, and six at centre back.
