Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. These buildings held a variety of businesses over many years. The building on the left operated as a butcher shop, but at times was also a cafe and the site of Whitehouse Motorcycles in the early 2000s. The business on the right at various times operated as "The Tuck Shop", a cafe, a milk bar and grocery shop. It was destroyed by fire in 1998 and the building demolished in 1999. In 2021 it is the location of Tristar Medical Centre. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Peard & Sons Plumbing on the corner of Lawrence and High, Roy Benson's store and Woolworths Food-Fair. Peards were located here in the 1940s. By November 1966 to C. 1973 this building was occupied by Tower Tyre Service, followed by Repco Auto Parts until 1985. It is now Lee Corner Chinese restaurant. Roy Benson was listed as a Grocer in the telephone directory, but he apparently had a few tables and chairs and was also a milk bar/café. He was heavily involved in the community including committee roles in Wodonga Dramatic Club, Wodonga & District Progress Association, Wodonga Carpet Bowls Association, Wodonga Chamber of Commerce and Wodonga Shire Council. This photograph, enlarged from a post card from the Rose Series, is representative of many images representing High Street, Wodonga as it developed over time. The Rose Series of postcards is a series of postcards of scenes from around Australia and some international ones as well. They were produced by the Rose Stereograph Company, which was the business of Victorian photographer George Rose (1861-1942). In 1880, George, aged 19, founded his business in Victoria, and soon became famous for producing stereographs, or stereo views. His early images included the landing at Anzac Cove, Ned and Dan Kelly’s Armour (taken at trial in 1880), The Duke & Duchess of York and their daughter Princess Elizabeth and Phar Lap winning the Melbourne Cup. When stereographs lost popularity during the 1920s, Rose switched to the production of postcards and decorative cards. He and his team of photographers took thousands of photos of scenery around Victoria and beyond, and the postcards became iconic images of Australian life. It was owned by the Costa family for many years, then taken over by Josephine Adams Bernardo Costa was born in Switzerland in 1829 and left his homeland for Sydney at the age of 27. He ventured south to the gold fields of Beechworth and Yackandandah. He moved to 1891. Bernardo applied for and was granted a wine licence on 24/14/1887 and established his Wine Saloon. After his death in 1915, the Wine Café continued to be operated by his daughters Annie, Angela and Gertrude. They also operated a boarding house behind the café. The business operated under a range of owners for approximately 72 years, closing in about 1963. It was estimated that hundreds of thousands of gallons of wines of all kinds were sold there. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection.
