The 8th Light Horse was raised from companies of the colonial Victorian Mounted Rifles located in North-east Victoria following federation. In 1912 a major reorganisation of the Australian military forces resulted in the regiment being renumbered 16th Light Horse. Part of a collection of photographs taken by unknown photographer serving with 8th Light Horse Regiment in Middle East 1916-1918. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. Possibly used as plough winkers for horses on farms in the 19th and 20th century.A pair of vintage leather horse winkers with steel rings, a bit and bars and side leather buckles to attach it to the cheek straps of the bridle to help focus the horse's vision to the front. The pole and neck straps are adjustable and can be lengthened and tightened without altering the blinds. The front strap goes around the horse's muzzle. The 13th Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised in Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. The 7th Australian Light Horse (VMR) was raised from companies of the pre-federation Victorian Mounted Rifles mainly in the central area of Victoria and the Goulburn valley. In 1912 it was renumbered 15th Light Horse with the motto Pro Rege et Patria and retaining the territorial title Victorian Mounted Rifles. This tin has been made early in the 20th century to hold Kornies biscuits. For the first half of the 20th century biscuits were mostly not packaged and were sold by the pound weight in grocery shops. Kornies breakfast cereals and biscuits were produced by the U.S.A. multinational company of Nabisco.This item is retained as an example of how groceries were stored and sold in the early to mid 20th century. This is a cylindrical tin with a detached lid. The sides of the tin are painted green with multi-coloured printing and an image of a farmer with a horse-drawn wheat harvester. Fernshaw was a rural township 63 km north-east of Melbourne and 10 km north-east of Healesville. Situated on the Watts River, near where a log had fallen making a convenient crossing, Fernshaw was settled in the 1860s. It provided good country for orchards and berry growing. The location was at the foot of Blacks Spur, with Mounts Juliet and Mondah rising on either side, providing spectacular scenery. There were nearby fern gullies giving rise to the name – ‘shaw’ is old English for thicket or wood. By 1875 Fernshaw had a post office (1865), two hotels, a school (1871) and stores. It was famed for its beauty, attracting tourists. In 1886 the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works began work on the Watts River water catchment scheme – later to become Maroondah – and the Board obtained approval for the catchment country to be reserved and kept free of settlement. This required the removal of the Fernshaw township, which was completed by about 1890.
