In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited Australia. The Port Melbourne Council established a Strong Post in St Kilda Road to welcome the royal couple. Standing third and fourth from left Mrs CRICHTON, holding an Australian flag, and Cr J P CRICHTON. The tall man in centre of photograph looking at the camera is S S ANDERSON, Town Clerk. Second from right is Cr William HOWE, Mayor. Roy Kyle started writing his remarkable memoirs at the age of eighty-nine and almost completed his story before he died. Bryce Courtney was asked if he would edit Roy's work with the view to it being published. Roy Kyle was a typical Anzac, fiercely patriotic and prepared to give his life for King and country. He couldn't wait to have a go and enlisted at seventeen, a year underage, and found himself in a trench in Lone Pine on his eighteenth birthday. The battle of Lone Pine, more than any other, established the legend of Gallipoli and was where a new nation was called upon to test its courage. The program states: "The University of Melbourne presents the Melbourne Theatre Company in The Merchant of Venice". The play completes the Melbourne Theatre Company's Season 24, Part one, of performances at the Athenaeum Theatre, The Melbourne Theatre company was also performing at the Russell Street Theatre (at the Melbourne University. ). While MTC was waiting for its purpose-built playhouse at Southbank to be completed, performances were held at the Athenaeum and popular with subscribers. Program notes state that the company thanks everyone for their support "during Part 1 of the Season, during which attendances were higher than at any other time in our Company's history". The Artistic Director for this season was Ray Lawler, author of the Doll Trilogy which was later performed at the Athenaeum Theatre.
