Decorative object - Embroided Postcards, c.1914-1918
A selection of 15 embroided silk postcards from a soldier named James (Jim). Edges are embossed and a central piece of silk is fastened to each postcard carrying various inscriptions in brightly coloured thread. The designs are mostly floral or patriotic. The silk portion of some postcards contains a pocket in which miniature cards are contained.Front: various including "To my dear mother", "A kiss from France", "To my dear sister" and "From your loving son" Back: various including "My best love to you all at home/from Jim". Postcards addressed to: "Mrs. J Corkish/no. 4 Marsden Terrace/Ramsey" and: "Miss M Corkish" appears to be "C/O Healin (?) Bank/ Revival (?)/Manchester" -

Coloured postcard of the view from Little Collins St looking north along Elizabeth St. Has a northbound cable tram and several horse-drawn wagons in the view. In the view are the GPO, Newing's Artists materials, Royal Arcade, and Turner's bicycles. The letter is dated 8/12 from an Eck in Toorak addressed to Doris Ettelson in Ballarat. The stamp used was introduced in 1913 by the Commonwealth Government as the first National stamp - see reference. Card published by C T Melbourne. Rose Series postcard No. P 10711, titled "The Hospital buildings, Melbourne Vic" with W class 232 southbound in Swanston Street at Lonsdale Street. This tram was converted to a W2 class during Jan. 1932. Has another tram behind it. The Melbourne Hospital is in the background and nurses and patients can be seen on the balconies. There is one horse drawn cab parked in Lonsdale Street near the cast iron urinal structure along with a fruit vendor's carts by the hotel entry. The Villa Alba Restoration Fund was established by the Villa Alba Preservation Committee. As part of a fundraising activity, they commissioned Suzie Dickson to photograph six panels in the Upper Hall that had been uncovered to date by conservators. The dado panels extend along the entire upper hall. Many are still to be restored. These images were used to create a series of six large postcards. In the view are Crockers and the Art Gallery Association buildings. The later became the SEC Ballarat city offices. Image possibly taken c1912 as the trams appear to have driver's windows. Car featured in photo is No. 17. Note on the position of the rear lifeguard area of the tram is the word "Summerscales". Titled "Sturt St from Lydiard St Ballarat" centrally along the top of the card. The printer/publisher of the card is "The Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. Ltd, Melbourne and Sydney". Alice McGREGOR Born: 1908; unknown parents. Possibly adopted by the Salter family? Electoral Roll 1936: Highland Terrace Kangaroo Flat. Alice Mary Salter and William Robert Salter living together; presumed to be sister and brother. William Robert Salter was killed in a MVA in Bendigo in 1937 aged 26.
