Banner - BANNER, HMAS BENDIGO, RAN
Gangway banner from the Fremantle class Patrol boat HMAS Bendigo (11) P211. Decommissioned at Cairns on 9 September 2006. Two banners presented to Training Ship Bendigo staff - one for RSL Museum and one for Training Ship.This is a heavy duty vinyl banner used on the ships gangway. Background colour is blue with the words HMAS BENDIGO printed in yellow paint along the banner. At each end of the banner is the crest of HMAS BENDIGO. The crest shows a rope circle and in the centre is the top of a battlement with the flag of the Southern Cross. Above the rope circle is a stylised crown with parts of a sailing ship on the crown. Under the rope circle are a stone axe, a nulla nulla and a boomerang. Under the weapons on a banner are the words in English "Advance with Purpose". Charge Clip, Ammunition
Three examples of the ammunition charge clips used during World War 1 by the Australian and allied forces. These were preloaded with five live rounds of ammunition for the SMLE .303" rifle and were a convenient method of quickly replenishing the 10 round magazine. The clip is made of stamped spring steel with a matte black paint finish. These clips were preloaded with live ammunition and carried in the soldiers ammunition pouches. Whilst in the field the clips were salvaged and reloaded with fresh rounds when the opportunity was available, ie during a lull in battle, etc.Some markings present: two examples are stamped with "E" and "ll", the other is stamped with "K" and "ll". -

Helmet, Steel MK111
An example of a British pattern steel battle helmet painted dark Khaki, complete with camouflage netting, chin strap and inner support liner. This is an Australian Army type MK111 steel helmet, standard issue for Australian infantry personnel during WW11 operations. The inside of the helmet is padded with a protective, dense rubber liner and has an adjustable cotton webbing chin strap. Australian manufacture, dated 1942, similar to the British "Brodie" pattern steel helmet originally introduced during WW1. The rim of the helmet is stamped '1942' and is marked number '7'. -

Melbourne Legacy
Furniture, Table and Chairs, Not known, believed to be during the 1920's
The table and chairs once belonged to the Officers' Mess, 24th Battalion. From 1928 - 1936 the CO 24th Battallion was Lt Col S.G. Savige, DSO MC. It was during this time that the chairs were made and used for dining-in nights. During the a ceremony of remembrance, each officer stood behind his chair and called the name on its back as a mark of respect for those KIA during WW1. At the inaugural meeting of the Club, from which arose Melbourne Legacy in September 1923, eight of the fourteen members had worn the colour patch of 24th Battalion.The connection to Savige and the fact that many of his officers from 24th Battalion became members of Melbourne Legacy. This table and its chairs were formally gifted to Melbourne Legacy on 9th May 1956 when the Club moved to Legacy House. They have been used since in the Club's Board Room, now located on level 1, Legacy House, 293 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Two Legatees were responsible for fully refurbishing the table and chairs - Legatee Gordon Beith (Morrabbin Branch) and Legatee Ted McKenzie (Footscray/Sunshine Branch) Board Room Table - Clear varnished timber table with a two piece glass top Table legs are turned timber on wheels x 5. Two at each end and one in the centre. Chairs - Clear varnished timber with leather cushions x 20. Each chair has an engraved plaque with an officer's name from 24th Battalion. With the exception of one who died shortly after returning to Australia all were KIA in various battles during WW1. The 24th Battalion (the Kooyong Regiment) Robinson Road, Surrey Hills. Book, Battling with the World by A.L.O.E - awarded to Sylvia Richards, Ringwood State School 1930

(a Lady of England), was the daughter of Henry St George Tucker (1771-1851), a distinguished official of the British East India Company. From 1852 till her death she wrote many stories for children, most of them allegories with an obvious moral, and devoted the proceeds to charity. In 1875 she left England for India to engage in missionary work, and died at Amritsar on the 2nd of December 1893. Book with Red Hard Cover, purchased from The Brown Study, Ringwood. No date, but presented as an award in 1930. Mervyn Clive Townsend was born in Bairnsdale on 5.2.1917 to Edward and Muriel Townsend. The family moved to Bendigo in 1930. His father was a teacher at the Bendigo High School. Mervyn enlisted in the RAN on 14.10.1940 age 23 years for temporary service and Commissioned at HMAS Cerberus. He was posted as Surgeon Lieutenant (Dental) on the HMAS Sydney on 5.4.1941. He was later KIA on 19.11.1941 along with the whole crew of 645 during a battle with the German Cruiser (Raider) Kormoran. His very brief records of 5 pages states “Missing presumed lost Sydney 20.11.1941.Black & white photograph of a Naval Officer in uniform re M C Townsend. Photograph has a light grey surround. The Battle Dress is a 1953 model, style used for many years. The uniform was issued to William Gamaliel Bartlett, Regt No’s 35052 (VX25300) enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 11.6.1940 age 21 years, 2/9th Field Ambulance, taken POW Malaya, discharged from AIF on 12.11.1945 with the rank of Pte. He later enlisted in the CMF on 20.7.1959, unit OCTU 3 TRG GRP and was discharged in 1974 with the rank of WO 2 after 15 years 32 days. The first Seafarers Service was held on 23 October 1905 in the St Paul's Cathedral in London to celebrate the Centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson on 21 October 1805. Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith launched the first Seafarers Service two years later and the first service was held on Sunday 10 November 1907. National and house flags are used during the annual Seafarers Service. The Adelaide Steamship Company was an Australian shipping company and later a diversified industrial and logistics conglomerate. It was formed by a group of South Australian businessmen in 1875. The service continue to reflect the full range of the maritime activities in Australia. Letter written from (unknown) POW imprisioned by the Japanese on Morotai Island from 1942 - 1945 to (unknown) friend. Descriptive of life and treatment in POW camp. The island was captured by the Japanese in early 1942. Morotai's southern plain was taken by American forces in September 1944 during the Battle of Morotai, and used as a staging point for the Allied invasion of the Philippines in early 1945, and of Borneo in May and June of that year. Japanese soldier Teruo Nakamura was discovered in the Morotai jungle in 1974, as one of the WWII Japanese soldiers who held out subsequent to the Japanese military's surrender.Photocopy of letter, 4 pages, originally written in ink on (unofficial) Australian Red Cross form.Added to head of letter at a later date is inscription ' First letter written home for 3 1/2 years'.Top left hand- FOR SAFETY/ IN YOUR LETTERS DO NOT REFER TO:-/ The name of your ship or other ships in the convoy, or its escorts./The date of sailing, ports of call, or probable destination./ The description of troops, their loca-/tion or any other information/ which, if intercepted, would be of/ value to the enemy. Soldier's Pay book issued to John Strobel Green VX32816. Born at Wonthaggi on the 19/4/1913. These books were usually carried by the soldiers in their battle dress breast pocket. They note personal details, rate of pay and promotions, and the place in which the soldier was paid each fortnight – effectively plotting soldiers' movements in the Army. From the pay book GREEN enlisted in June 1940, trained at Puckapunyal before embarking overseas in February 1941 for the Middle East. Textile - Quilt, Harry Walter Hewitt Wilton, 1885 - 1915
The quilt, alternatively known as a wagga due to its improvised nature of creation, was made by Harry Walter Hewitt Wilton (great grandfather of donor), b.1872, d.1950. Harry joined the Essex Regiment and served in the British Military in India, as well as seeing action in the Boer War. Married wife Mary Elizabeth in India in 1895, she was a seamstress. Harry was injured during a battle and made this quilt as part of his rehabilitation. Quilt was made using woolen army singlets. Harry and Mary moved to Victoria, near Orbost, in 1914. Patchwork style quilt with coloured pieces of dyed woolen singlets stitched together over a backing. Features feather stitching between pieces and around border edges. Helmet, Steel M1917
An example of the World War 1 standard USA Army battle helmet issued to infantry troops. This version was known as the M1917 Helmet and is based on the British Brodie helmet with minor modifications. This steel helmet is painted matte khaki, with sawdust added to the exterior finish to provide a non-reflective surface. The brim, which is fitted with an outer steel rim, varies in width from 32 mm at the front to 35 mm at the sides and rear. The helmet inner liner is incomplete. Photocopy of a school assignment. It describes a number of local War Memorials and gives information about Frederick Henry Stockfield who is listed on the Mitcham War Memorials. His family lived in Blackburn Road Blackburn and he had worked picking fruit. He was an artillery man who trained in England and fought in the Third Battle of Ypres. He died of wounds on 21/9/1917 and is buried in the Military Huts Cemetery in Dickenbuscg, Belgium. Photographs of his grave and the cemetery are included. The items are from 7 January to 14 December 1989. Many articles relate to the renaming of BCAE. A proposal for the College to merge with another facility was put forward. This became a battle for independence. Letters to the Editor highlighted some of the concerns. The merger proposition was debated between Deakin University in Geelong and Ballarat College of Advanced Education for six months. BCAE became Ballarat University College in 1990.
